  • Neurodevelopmental conditions and adaptive functioning – a co‐twin control study

Open Access•Johan Isaksson, Filippa Eklund et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2026

BACKGROUND: Challenges in adaptive or daily functioning are inherent to diagnostic criteria for neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs). However, less is known regarding the influence of factors that may confound the association between NDCs and adaptive functioning. Therefore, we examined the associations between different NDCs and adaptive functioning while adjusting for co-occurring conditions, genetics, and shared environment. METHODS: We used a…

  • “Let them show what they can do”

Open Access•Jia White, John Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Review•2026

Despite efforts to build inclusive education experiences, many autistic youth still report negative school experiences. Strengths-based approaches that draw upon the unique strengths, interests, and resources of individuals and their environments may be an integral component of promoting inclusive school environments for these youth, but there is a limited understanding of how these approaches are implemented in schools. • A good autistic life

Open Access•Åsa Hedlund, Maria Eriksson Wester et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Through our autistic-led approach drawing on neurodiverse frames of analysis, our work presents a first initial investigation of autistic flourishing among women. Our findings suggest qualitative differences in autistic derived definitions of flourishing and its indicators compared to those of neurotypicals, emphasizing the importance of developing an autistic-driven understanding of flourishing

Open Access•Jia White, Sarah McGarry et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2023

Strengths-based approaches leveraging the strengths and interests of autistic students are increasingly recognised as important to meeting their school-related needs. A scoping review exploring elements contributing to strengths-based approaches for autistic students in schools was undertaken. Eighteen articles were identified, with results conceptualised according to the Bioecological Model of Development. One personal (strengths and interests),…

  • Altered task induced functional brain networks and small-world properties in autism

Open Access•Tushar Chouhan, Melissa H Black et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

These findings may provide evidence at a neural level for the notion that autistic individuals have a preference for bottom-up lower-level processing, or alterations in top-down global processing, potentially contributing to the FER difficulties observed in this population. Results also suggest that functional brain networks in autism show significantly altered task-induced whole-brain small-world properties as compared to non-autistic individual…

  • Why People Leave Community Service Organizations

Open Access•Ben Milbourn, Melissa H Black et al.•ARTICLE•Voluntas Revista Internacional de…•2018•Cited by: 3

Despite the benefits of volunteering to the individual, organization and community, the retention of volunteers within volunteer and not-for-profit organizations remains a significant challenge. Examining the motivations of individuals who have ceased their engagement in a volunteer organization may provide insights to improve retention rates. The perceptions of 64 volunteers formerly involved in an international volunteer organization were exami…
