  • Cumulative childhood adversity and educational exclusion from a life-course perspective in Japan

    Open Access•Haruyo Mitani•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology of…•2026

Although sociological research views educational exclusion as a process, empirical studies rely primarily on conventional socioeconomic indicators of family background. This study used a life-course perspective to examine how cumulative childhood adversity, measured as adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), was associated with educational exclusion. Using data from a national postal survey of adults conducted in 2023 (n = 11,565), we analyzed pers…

  • Associations of adverse and positive childhood experiences with adult socioeconomic well-being in Japan

    Open Access•Haruyo Mitani•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2026

Positive childhood experiences (PCEs) have been suggested to lessen the negative effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on later health outcomes. However, research is limited on whether PCEs modify the association between ACEs and socioeconomic well-being. Hence, this study examined whether PCEs modify the association between ACEs and adults’ poor socioeconomic well-being. Data were collected from a cross-sectional postal survey conducte…

    Open Access•Haruyo Mitani•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Despite increasing research into connections between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and health problems, the impact of parental ACEs on parenting practices has not been sufficiently clear. The objective of the study was to consider whether the association between maternal ACEs and child maltreatment is affected by three mediating factors: socio‐economic status (SES), social support and maternal psychological distress in adulthood. The Kochi…

  • Types of Social Support Networks That Can Reduce Parents’ Loneliness

    Open Access•Haruyo Mitani•ARTICLE•Kazoku syakaigaku kenkyu•2020
