Emotions and Pan-Asian Organizing in the U.S. Southwest
Emotion is recognized as essential in human service work. Despite a recent surge of research on emotions in organizations in the past 20 years, communication scholars, however, have paid inadequate attention to workplace emotions. Yet, one key to promoting sustainable identity-based organizing lies in crafting alignments among identity, emotion, and action. This gap motivates the current study to examine emotions across organizational positions w…
Establishing Cross-Cultural Measurement Equivalence of Scales Associated with Face-Negotiation Theory
To extend face-negotiation theory (FNT) to romantic relationship contexts, we examined the patterns of responses to six survey instruments among five countries. We intend this initial paper to serve as a tutorial of testing measurement invariance—specifically by elaborating on: (a) how to establish measurement equivalence and (b) how to test measurement invariance using multigroup Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The results highlight the importance…
Measuring Patterns of Self-Disclosure in Intercultural Friendship
This study examined how friendship types, levels of friendship, and cultural backgrounds affected breadth of self-disclosure (BSD). BSD was measured with six self-disclosure topic items—in which higher scores indicated greater willingness to engage in conversations about various topics—from three groups with varying experiences with intercultural friendships. Confirmatory factor analysis was used with Multiple-Indicators, Multiple-Causes models t…
Self-Efficacy in Intercultural Communication
This study designed and validated an instrument for measuring sojourners' intercultural and everyday communication self-efficacy. Factor analysis of a Likert-type scale completed by Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme respondents (N = 213) identified a unidimensional-factor solution with 34-items loading (α=.95). It revealed negative, positive, and no correlation with existing scales that lent validity to the resulting Sojourner Self-Effi…
Influences of Culture on Self-Disclosure as Relationally Situated in Intercultural and Interracial Friendships from a Social Penetration Perspective
Intercultural and interracial relationships face barriers, tensions, and challenges that are absent from intracultural and intraracial relationships. These challenges provide the impetus for this study to examine the influences of individualism-collectivism and relational intimacy on topics and dimensions of self-disclosure in intercultural/interracial friendships from a social penetration perspective. A total of 252 participants responded to the…
