The Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21
Perspectives of chronic pain
The authors compare theoretical perspectives of chronic pain using a restrictive comprehensive categorization. Four of the perspectives (mind-body dualism, psychological, radical operant--behavioral, and radical cognitive) are categorized as restrictive. The other 4 perspectives (International Association for the Study of Pain, gate control, nonradical operant--behavioral, and cognitive-behavioral) that incorporate multiple facets are categorized…

Cultural Awareness and Ethnic Loyalty
This study examined the adequacy of Keefe and Padilla's (1987) model of cultural orientation on a sample of Mexican American students enrolled either in a technical college ( N = 125) or a state university ( N = 239) in southern Texas. Specifically, the goodness of fit of the factor model for the Cultural Awareness and Ethnic Loyalty scales was tested using confirmatory factor analyses. Results indicated an excellent fit for the model, which sugg…
Psychometric Comparability of the English-and Spanish-Language Versions of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory
The psychometric adequacy of the English-and Spanish-language versions of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was compared across English-speaking Latino American women (n = 17) and men (n = 18) and Spanish-speaking Latino American women (n = 10) and men (n = 14) who were experiencing stressful and potentially anxiety-producing situations associated with physical pain. Subjects were administered the STAI as well as the Minnesota Multiphasic …
An Investigation of the Structural Validity of Loevinger's Model and Measure of Ego Development
This study demonstrates the use of structural equation modeling for investigating a hierarchical model of personality based on Loevinger's (1976) conceptualization. This model was constructed to have a multifactorial and hierarchical structure in which the ego development construct served as the source of covariation for specific personality constructs of impulse control, interpersonal style, conscious preoccupations, and cognitive style. This mo…
Psychometric Properties of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test
The psychometric properties of the two halves the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (SCT) Form 81 were examined by comparing the fit of structural equation models representing parallel, tau-equivalent, and congeneric properties. Data for these models were based on item-sum scores for the two halves of the SCT and eight measures of aspects of ego development, the construct purportedly measured by the SCT. The data were from a sample o…
Gender Comparability of Forms 81 of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test
Forms 81 of the Washington University Sentence Completion Test were found to be closely comparable for men and women. Data taken from 92 men and 175 women show the median item validity (correlation of item rating with item-sun rating) is slightly higher for men (.53) than for women (.45). However, the difference is completely accounted for by difference in the variance of the subsamples. These results suggest that the method employed in construct…
