  • Social, sexual and structural factors shaping HIV vulnerability among transgender women in Mali

Open Access•Marion Fiorentino, Kanuya Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2026

Transgender women (TGW) in Mali face discrimination and stigma, possibly exacerbating HIV vulnerability and limiting access to health services. We identified HIV vulnerability factors among TGW by exploring perceptions and experiences of TGW from urban, peri-urban and rural areas, and those of community workers, using six focus groups (n = 44) and a data thematic content analysis. The analysis highlighted that TGW’s sexual networks included their…

  • Écrire l’exil

Open Access•Adéchinan David Adekambi, Bakary Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•HYBRIDA•2026

This article offers an analysis of Bled (2016) by Tierno Monénembo, highlighting the phenomenon of exile and the crucial role of reading in reconstructing the identity of the main character, Zoubida. Using a dual theoretical framework – biographism and sociocriticism – the study demonstrates that Zoubida’s exile is far from being merely geographical; it is deeply rooted in the socio-political and patriarchal constraints of her environment, such a…

  • Men Who Have Sex with Both Men and Women in West Africa

Open Access•Marion Fiorentino, Bakary Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2024

HIV is highly prevalent in men who have sex with men (MSM) in West Africa. Many MSM in the region also have sex with women (MSMW). Accordingly, they are a potential bridge subpopulation for HIV transmission to women. We aimed to evaluate the proportions and characteristics of West African MSMW at high behavioral risk of acquiring HIV from male partners and transmitting it to female partners (HBRMF). The cohort ANRS-12324 CohMSM Study included 630…

  • Barriers to global engagement for African researchers

Open Access•Bamba Gaye, Nzechukwu M Isiozor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2024

African researchers continue to face numerous barriers that limit the global dissemination and advancement of their research. These include high open-access publication fees, requirements for publishing in high-impact journals, inability to attend or host international conferences, and limited access to published papers and resources. In this viewpoint, we focus on the specific challenge of attending [...]

  • Socio-behavioral correlates of pre-exposure prophylaxis use and correct adherence in men who have sex with men in West Africa

Open Access•August Eubanks, Bakary Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Community-based clinic attendance and PE contact outside of scheduled visits were both associated with higher PrEP engagement, but some socially and economically marginalized participants struggled with adherence. As scale-up continues in West Africa, we recommend implementing community-based interventions and providing extra support for vulnerable users to ensure adequate PrEP engagement

  • Rate and Predictors of Ineffective HIV Protection in African Men Who Have Sex with Men Taking Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis

Open Access•August Eubanks, Bakary Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2022
