Norms or interests? Explaining EU aid allocation to Asean through strategic, normative, and economic lenses
Our paper examines the determinants of European Union (EU) aid allocation to ASEAN countries by testing competing theoretical explanations: strategic interest versus normative commitment. Drawing from selectorate theory, we hypothesize that EU aid is shaped by geopolitical alignment, regime type, and strategic considerations. Conversely, the Normative Power Europe thesis suggests that aid is conditioned on recipients’ human rights performance and…
Epistemic art as a learning-capable system
Conceptual artworks are conventionally approached as objects of interpretation - visual representations whose meaning is accessed through historical or theoretical reading. Our paper argues that some conceptual artworks function not merely as images of ideas but as epistemic structures that organize and constrain thought, and therefore require activation rather than just interpretation. Focusing on Ágnes Dénes’s Matrix of Knowledge, specifically …
EU-Asean Cooperation for Sustainable Growth
This research analysed the transformation of European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (EU-ASEAN), development cooperation into a multidimensional framework linking trade, aid, and sustainability. It situates the partnership within the global transformation of development governance from poverty reduction toward sustainability-oriented policy regimes. The research highlighted the EU’s dual identity as both a normative power an…
Be lucky!? – the interrelations of luck, success, and dependency relationships in the context of a disadvantaged community
Sex, Love, and Tenderness
Our study analyzes nearly a decade of letters and editorial responses published in the Hungarian edition of Bravo magazine’s iconic advice column Szex, Szerelem, Gyengédség (Sex, Love, and Tenderness, 1993–2002). Adopting a media-sociological lens, it explores how adolescent sexuality, intimacy, and emotion were articulated and negotiated in an Eastern European society in the midst of post-socialist transition. Drawing on a uniquely digitized cor…
Sex or Smartphone? – Analysis of the Relationship between Problematic Smartphone Usage and Sexual Activity Based on Homogeneous and Heterogeneous IDs and Machine Learning Algorithms
Objective . Our study explores the correlation between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and diminished offline sexual activity within a European Union member state characterized by a semi-peripheral economy. Background . Smartphones, as pervasive technological advancements, have transformed societal landscapes, embedding themselves into various facets of life and exacerbating physical and emotional reliance. Over 50% of users continue smartphone …
Social enterprise development in a disadvantaged community
This paper presents a nearly ten-year-long process of covering the history of social enterprise development in a small village in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, Hungary. The paper covers the hermeneutical interpretation of the process, the role and relationship between the community and the social enterprise developer, the process of development work, and how university education complements this process. The case study provides insights into the t…
Highways to Hell? Paths Towards the Formal Financial Exclusion
Whenever a household faces lack of banking payment services and access to funding, it often constraints their everyday activities and the chance to avail the financial services again. Our study explores the possible explanations of why a household becomes financially excluded in an underdeveloped area of Northern Hungary. By using a questionnaire ( n = 502) in the spring of 2019, we conducted a covariance-based SEM analysis for detecting the key …
