Gender mainstreaming in sweetpotato breeding and dissemination in Ghana and Malawi
Gender responsiveness in breeding programs to meet client and end user preferences for crops is essential. This case study analyzes the implementation experience of gender-responsive breeding and variety dissemination in Malawi and Ghana, focusing on good practices and challenges encountered. In Malawi, a training-of-trainers approach was employed to share knowledge among trained farmers. In Ghana, a research study was conducted to identify gende…
A Behavioral Intervention Increases Consumption of a New Biofortified Food by School Children
Children’s diets can have major implications for a wide range of diseases and their development outcomes. In Africa, micronutrient deficiency remains a major challenge and affects the health and development of vulnerable populations, especially children. A major effort to combat micronutrient deficiency has targeted biofortification of staple foods, with greatest potential being registered in the enrichment of, among others, sweetpotato with beta…
Goal-setting and volitional behavioural change
Malnutrition, particularly vitamin A deficiency, is a major public health problem in many developing countries. This study investigated whether priming or self-generation of goals, or whether attention to instrumental or experiential goals together with use of a reminder condition or not, promotes dietary behaviour intentions and change. A set of 556 randomly selected children aged 7-12 in Osun state, Nigeria, participated in an four-week interve…
Carotenoid contents in fresh, dried and processed sweetpotato products
In order to understand the effects of drying and processing sweetpotato storage roots into traditional baked food products on their pro‐vitamin A contents, total carotenoids and ß‐carotene were colorimetrically determined. Fresh and cooked storage roots, dried and stored chips, and sweetpotato processed products were used. Flesh colors of the storage roots were white, yellow, cream, orange, and purple. Total carotenoids ranged from trace to above…
