  • IA Richards’ P rinciples of Literary Criticism

    Open Access•Craig Hamilton•ARTICLE•Language and Literature…•2026

IA Richards is widely recognised as a founding father in 20th-century English stylistics. A century ago, one of his most important books, Principles of Literary Criticism , was first published. The book – which deals more with poetics than hermeneutics – has remained in print ever since. On the occasion of the centenary of its initial publication, this article focuses on three key topics that Richards explored in his 1924 book: value, experience …

  • Riffs

    Open Access•Sarah Raine, Craig Hamilton•ARTICLE•post(s•2025

RIFFS is a magazine created by a writing group at Birmingham City University. The publication emerged as a space to critically consider the ways in which we communicate research. As we wrote, we realised that by writing fiction, poetry, or by creating new forms of writing that grew out of our research, we were able to more clearly communicate our observations and ideas about popular music

  • Riffs

    Open Access•Sarah Raine, Craig Hamilton•ARTICLE•post(s•2025

  • Birmingham and the (International) Business of Live Music in Times of Covid-19

Adam Behr, Craig Hamilton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of World Popular Music•2022

This article discusses the context of, and presents findings from, a project examining the live music sector in Birmingham, UK. Podcasts have become an important part of music reception practices, providing new ways of engaging with reviews and recommendations, artist interviews and popular music histories. This article presents a replicable working methodology that can be applied to study the data associated with podcasts of any genre. In our analysis, we explore approximately 16,000 listener reviews of the Top 50 podcasts in the Apple (UK) music chart in order to discov…

  • Crisis as a Catalyst for Change

    Open Access•Sarah Raine, Iain A Taylor et al.•ARTICLE•IASPM Journal•2021

Since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, live music spaces – and the practices which produce them as economically viable – have found themselves in crisis. In spite of a UK government announcement on the 25th of July 2020 which allocated £2.25 million to support 150 music venues across the country, the processes of allocation, the conditions under which this emergency funding is allocated, and capacity to secure medium-to-long-term sustainabili…

  • Conceptual Integrations in La Prose Du Transsibérien Et De La Petite Jeanne De France by Blaise Cendrars

    Open Access•Craig Hamilton•ARTICLE•ODISEA Revista de estudios ingleses•2021

In this paper, I discuss La Prose du Transsibérien et de la petite Jeanne de France by Blaise Cendrars, a narrative poem first published in French in Paris in 1913. The poem has raised seemingly intractable questions for many years, given its status as one of the most important modernist poems, and one of the most important poems in 20th century French poetry. As I argue, considering some of the issues from the perspective of cognitive stylistics…

  • The meanings of ‘risk’

    Open Access•Craig Hamilton, Svenja Adolph et al.•ARTICLE•Discourse & Society•2007•Cited by: 17•References: 7

In the past, some confusing claims about the meaning of ‘risk’ have been made in the sociology of risk literature. In this article we present and discuss some empirical data from linguistic corpora that elucidate what risk means in ordinary language. This might provide social scientists with a firmer ground on which to base future statements pertaining to the meaning of risk. After a discussion of the problem, we analyse the word ‘risk’, as both …
