Child opinions related to a core outcome set for school-based healthy lifestyle behavior interventions
Introduction: Including children's perspectives developing health programs is a priority. This study gathered children's perspectives on outcomes in a Core Outcomes Set (COS), which they believe are important to measure in school-based healthy lifestyle behavioral interventions. “Is Everybody Comfortable?”#xd; Thinking Through Co-design Approaches to Better Support Girls’ Physical Activity in Schools
Of interest across the domains of sport, education and health in the UK and internationally is the challenge of engaging girls in physical activity. There has been increasing support for novel approaches that take seriously the notion of ‘co-design’: i.e. involving girls in decision-making processes that directly and indirectly affect their engagement with physical activity. Given this approach is still in its infancy, this study set out to explo…
Association between Chronotype and Physical Behaviours in Adolescent Girls
The aim of this study was to (1) describe accelerometer-assessed physical behaviours by chronotype, and (2) examine the association between chronotype and accelerometer-assessed physical behaviours in a cohort of adolescent girls. Chronotype (single question) and physical behaviours (GENEActiv accelerometer on the non-dominant wrist) were assessed in 965 adolescent girls (13.9 ± 0.8 years). Linear mixed-effects models examined the relationships a…
Adolescent perspectives on gendered ideologies in physical activity within schools
There has been growing concern about rising physical inactivity levels in female adolescents, with schools taking some responsibility to address this. Programmes designed for and by girls are increasingly being used by developing or delivering a programme of change and consultation to improve physical activity, physical education, and sport in school. However, to build an understanding of the nuances of such interventions, and better appreciate a…
Development of an Interactive Lifestyle Programme for Adolescents at Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes
Reporting on the intervention development process, which includes stakeholder input, could yield a flexible approach for use in this emerging 'at risk' groups and their families
Use of the socio-ecological model to explore factors that influence the implementation of a diabetes structured education programme (Extend project) inLilongwe, Malawi and Maputo, Mozambique
Findings from this study suggest that multi-faceted factors play a significant role to the implementation of DSMES programmes in LICs. In the future, EXTEND could be incorporated in the development of diabetes training and dedicated diabetes services in SSA healthcare systems, acting as an educational tool for both people with T2DM and HCPs. This project was supported by the Medical Research Council GCRF NCDs Foundation Awards 2016 Development Pa…
Maturational timing, physical self-perceptions and physical activity in UK adolescent females
Greater biological maturity (i.e. early maturity) in adolescent girls is associated with less involvement in MVPA and appears to be partly explained by lower perceptions of body attractiveness and physical self-worth. Physical activity interventions should consider girls' perceptions of their pubertal related physiological changes during adolescence, particularly among early maturing girls
