Surfing the red tide
The states of Oregon and Connecticut and the District of Columbia in the USA mandate the teaching of menstrual education which means the teachers of students with disabilities are expected to be familiar with the topics of hygiene, self-care, and independent living skills in relation to menstrual health needs. Special education teachers may need to attend to pre-menstrual symptoms, collect data on challenging behaviour, and ensure their students …

Recommendations include amplifying positive formations of maternal identity which may improve maternal mental health outcomes among sex-working moms
Depression and correlates of suicidal thoughts among mothers who are female sex workers in three low- and middle-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa
Introduction Depression is prevalent among female sex workers (FSW) in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) and poses an elevated risk of suicide. The current study employs the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) as a means of estimating “probable depression” and exploring correlates of suicidal thoughts in Kenyan, Nigerian, and Congolese mothers who are FSW (MFSW). Narrative Eco-Therapy During Matrescence May Help Mothers Transform Climate Distress into Ecological Awakening
This paper presents findings from a pilot study of a five-week feminist psychoeducational group developed for mothers experiencing eco-distress during matrescence, the developmental shift of motherhood. Weekly journaling prompts served as narrative provocations to catalyze reflection and identity transformation in a case study of five mothers. Rather than a clinical or therapeutic intervention, this study tested a scalable, consciousness-raising …
A Relationship-Centered Model of Supporting Exit From Commercial Sexual Exploitation
Conceptualizing commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) in linear stages of pre-, peri- and postexploitation misses the complex transformation of relationships required to engage in recovery. Through an ongoing partnership with a local residential recovery program, we conducted interviews with six survivors of CSE. Results suggest pivotal transition moments, first marking transition from childhood or domestic violence, when abuse becomes exchange, a…
Menstruation as a gendered weapon of control
Incarcerated women in the US often struggle to access free period products. Yet, their challenges are not well understood, partly because the provision of period products within prisons is governed by state policies. To understand barriers to accessing period products and their impacts on well-being, in-depth qualitative semistructured interviews were conducted with formerly incarcerated women in a southeastern U.S. state. Six themes were develop…
