  • Can Managing Climate Risks Be a Catalyst for Broader Transformative Change

    Open Access•Rob Swart, W Timmermans et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This essay addresses the long-term effectiveness of urban climate change adaptation approaches, based, inter alia, on work in the C40 city network. We argue that in most cities, the dominant framing of climate risk management almost exclusively focuses on short-term incrementalities and preventive solutions directly tackling hazards, vulnerability, and exposure. This approach has serious flaws, leading to missed opportunities for longer-term sust…

  • Enhancing the review process in global environmental assessments

    Open Access•Jean Palutikof, Sarah Boulter et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 7

External review is a fundamental component of Global Environmental Assessments, ensuring their processes are comprehensive, objective, open and transparent, and are perceived as such. Here, we focus on review of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Reports. The review process has received little scrutiny, although review comments and author responses are public. Here we analyse review documents from the Fourth and Fifth Ass…

  • IPCC emission scenarios

Open Access•Jiesper Strandsbjerg Tristan Pedersen, Jiesper Tristan Strandsbjerg Pedersen…•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 17

Long-term global emission scenarios enable the analysis of future climate change, impacts, and response strategies by providing insight into possible future developments and linking these different climate research elements. Such scenarios play a crucial role in the climate change literature informing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Assessment Reports (ARs) and support policymakers. This article reviews the evolution of emi…

  • From Urban Façade to Green Foundation

    Open Access•Rob Swart, W Timmermans et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Planning•2021

Climate risk management evolves rapidly from one additional challenge for urban planning into a radical driver of urban development. In addition to fundamental changes in urban planning to increase long-term resilience, the creation of new opportunities for sustainable transformation is imperative. While urban planners increasingly add climate risks to their menu, implementation of effective action is lagging. To reduce urban infrastructure’s vul…
