PM2.5 and ozone pollution-related health challenges in Japan with regards to climate change
Thailand’s mid-century greenhouse gas emission pathways to achieve the 2 degrees Celsius target
Plant-level mitigation strategies could enable carbon neutrality by 2060 and reduce non-CO2 emissions in China’s iron and steel sector
Shared socioeconomic pathways and long-term GHG mitigation towards 2050 in Thailand cement industry
Thailand’s cement industry shows a significant share of energy consumption and GHG emissions in industries. Therefore, the industry will need to curb its emissions to meet the first national determined contribution (NDC). This study attempts to clarify two research questions: firstly, what is the cement demand under several scenarios of economic and demographic development pathways in Thailand’s cement industry? Secondly, how Thailand’s cement in…
Deep decarbonization pathways in the building sector
China’s economic growth has been largely relying on the consumption of coal. The country has realized that its economic development has to be free from dependence on fossil fuels. On 30 June 2015, China submitted its ‘Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)’ in preparation for the Conference of Parties 21 (COP21). One of the important actions in China’s NDC is to lower carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions per unit of GDP by 60% to 65% from 2005 leve…
The contribution of transport policies to the mitigation potential and cost of 2 °C and 1.5 °C goals
The transport sector contributes around a quarter of global CO 2 emissions; thus, low-carbon transport policies are required to achieve the 2 C and 1.5 C targets. In this paper, representative transport policy scenarios are structured with the aim of achieving a better understanding of the interaction between the transport sector and the macroeconomy. To accomplish this, the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model/Transport (AIM/Transport) model, coupled w…
Achieving zero emission in China's urban building sector
Economic Impacts from PM 2.5 Pollution-Related Health Effects in China
This study evaluates the PM2.5 pollution-related health impacts on the national and provincial economy of China using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model and the latest nonlinear exposure-response functions. Results show that the health and economic impacts may be substantial in provinces with a high PM2.5 concentration. In the WoPol scenario without PM2.5 pollution control policy, we estimate that China experiences a 2.00% GDP loss and …
Air pollution co-benefits of low carbon policies in road transport
This letter assesses low carbon scenarios for India at the subnational level in the passenger road transport sector. We estimate the future passenger mobility demand and assess the impact of carbon mitigation policies using the Asia–Pacific Integrated Assessment/Enduse models. This letter focuses on the transitions of energy and emissions of passenger transport in India in alternate scenarios i.e. the business-as-usual scenario and a low carbon s…
An impact assessment of sustainable technologies for the Chinese urban residential sector at provincial level
Recently, energy use in the urban residential sector of China has drastically increased due to higher incomes and urbanization. The fossil fuels dominant energy supply has since worsened the air quality, especially in urban areas. In this study we estimate the future energy service demands in Chinese urban residential areas, and then use an AIM/Enduse model to evaluate the emission reduction potential of CO _2 , SO _2 , NO _x and PM. Considering …
Technological feasibility and costs of achieving a 50 % reduction of global GHG emissions by 2050
In this article we examine the technological feasibility of the global target of reducing GHG emissions to 50 % of the 1990 level by the year 2050. We also perform a detailed analysis of the contribution of low-carbon technologies to GHG emission reduction over mid- and long-term timeframes, and evaluate the required technological cost. For the analysis we use AIM/Enduse[Global], a techno-economic model for climate change mitigation policy assess…
Understanding energy transitions
Global sustainability is increasingly influenced by economic growth and social change in non-OECD countries, especially in Asia.Growth models suggest that industrializing economies will become first relatively more resource-and pollution-intensive, before becoming more resource-efficient and less polluting, following the pattern of higher-income economies. This 'environmental convergence' is assumed to parallel economic convergence during processe…
Low-carbon transitions in world regions
This study focuses on low-carbon transitions in the mid-term and analyzes mitigation potentials of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2020 and 2030 in a comparison based on bottom-up-type models. The study provides in-depth analyses of technological mitigation potentials and costs by sector and analyzes marginal abatement cost (MAC) curves from 0 to 200 US $/tCO2 eq in major countries. An advantage of this study is that the technological feasibili…
