  • Treatment of organic resources before soil incorporation in semi-arid regions improves resilience to El Niño, and increases crop production and economic returns

Open Access•Jo Smith, Dali Nayak et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The use of limited organic resources to build resilience to drought in semi-arid regions was investigated using systems modelling. The study focused on Halaba in Ethiopia, drawing on biophysical and socio-economic data obtained from a survey of farms before, during and after the 2015/16 El Niño event. Using a simplified weather dataset to remove noise from weather fluctuations, a ten yearly El Niño was demonstrated to cause significant long-term …

  • Exploring temporality in socio-ecological resilience through experiences of the 2015–16 El Niño across the Tropics

    Open Access•Stephanie Whitfield, Emilie Beauchamp et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 11

In a context of both long-term climatic changes and short-term climatic shocks, temporal dynamics profoundly influence ecosystems and societies. In low income contexts in the Tropics, where both exposure and vulnerability to climatic fluctuations is high, the frequency, duration, and trends in these fluctuations are important determinants of socio-ecological resilience. In this paper, the dynamics of six diverse socio-ecological systems (SES) acr…

  • Modeling Smallholder Farmers' Preferences for Soil Management Measures

    Open Access•Solomon Tarfasa, Bedru B Balana et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2018

  • Trees, soils, and warthogs – Distribution of services and disservices from reforestation areas in southern Ethiopia

Open Access•Anja Byg, Paula Novo et al.•ARTICLE•Forest Policy and Economics•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Conservation projects have often been criticised for creating global benefits while causing negative impacts on local livelihoods. Ecosystem services approaches have been seen as one way to change this by focussing explicitly on maintaining ecosystems for human well-being of stakeholders at various scales. However, ecosystem services approaches have often ignored trade-offs between groups of people and issues of power and do not automatically lea…

  • Land Cover Change and Gully Development Between 1965 and 2000 in Umbulo Catchment, Ethiopia

    Open Access•Awdenegest Moges, Nicholas M Holden•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2009

Land cover change studies examine the status of land to explain physiographic and socio-economic processes, causes and effects, and environmental implications. The present paper relates land cover change in a food-insecure catchment to development of gullies, particularly their position in the landscape as well as the history of gully formation. Maps were produced for 1965, 1972, 1986, and 2000 from aerial photographs and satellite images. The co…
