  • Testing spatial out-of-sample area of influence for grain forecasting models

Open Access•Frank Davenport, Dawn Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

We examine the factors that determine if a grain forecasting model fit to one region can be transferred to another region. Prior research has proposed examining the area of applicability (AoA) of a model based on structurally similar characteristics in the Earth Observation predictors and weights based on the model derived feature importance. We expand on and evaluate this approach in the context of grain yield forecasting in Sub-Saharan Africa. …

  • Investigating the relationship between growing season quality and childbearing goals

    Open Access•Nina Brooks, Kelly Grace et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Agricultural production and household food security are hypothesized to play a critical role connecting climate change to downstream effects on women's health, especially in communities dependent on rainfed agriculture. Seasonal variability in agriculture strains food and income resources and makes it a challenging time for households to manage a pregnancy or afford a new child. Yet, there are few direct assessments of the role locally varying ag…

  • Sending out an SOS

Open Access•Frank Davenport, Shraddhanand Shukla et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

We examine relationships between the start of rainy season (SOS) and sub-national grain (white maize) market price movements in five African countries. Our work is motivated by three factors: (a) some regions are seeing increasing volatility SOS timing; (b) SOS represents the first observable occurrence in the agricultural season and starts a chain reaction of decisions that influence planting, labor allocation, and harvest—all of which can have …

  • Using out-of-sample yield forecast experiments to evaluate which earth observation products best indicate end of season maize yields

Open Access•Frank Davenport, Laura Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

In East Africa, accurate grain yield predictions can help save lives and protect livelihoods. Regional grain yield forecasts can inform decisions regarding the availability and prices of key staples, food aid, and large humanitarian responses. Here, we use earth observation (EO) products to develop and evaluate subnational grain yield forecasts for 56 regions located in two severely food insecure countries: Kenya and Somalia. We identify, for a g…

  • Distinguishing southern Africa precipitation response by strength of El Niño events and implications for decision-making

Open Access•Catherine Pomposi, Chris Funk et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2018

December–February precipitation in southern Africa during recent El Niño events is studied by distinguishing circulation and precipitation responses during strong and moderate-to-weak events. We find that while both strong and moderate-to-weak El Niño events tend to dry southern Africa, the pattern and magnitude of precipitation anomalies in the region are different, with strong El Niño events resulting in rainfall deficits often less than −0.88 …

  • Child health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa

    Open Access•Frank Davenport, Kelly Grace et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2017•Cited by: 24•References: 11

  • The climate hazards infrared precipitation with stations—a new environmental record for monitoring extremes

Open Access•Chris Funk, Pete Peterson et al.•ARTICLE•Scientific Data•2015

The Climate Hazards group Infrared Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) dataset builds on previous approaches to ‘smart’ interpolation techniques and high resolution, long period of record precipitation estimates based on infrared Cold Cloud Duration (CCD) observations. The algorithm i) is built around a 0.05° climatology that incorporates satellite information to represent sparsely gauged locations, ii) incorporates daily, pentadal, and monthly …

  • Using constructed analogs to improve the skill of National Multi-Model Ensemble March–April–May precipitation forecasts in equatorial East Africa

Open Access•Shraddhanand Shukla, Christopher Funk et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

In this study we implement and evaluate a simple ‘hybrid’ forecast approach that uses constructed analogs (CA) to improve the National Multi-Model Ensemble’s (NMME) March–April–May (MAM) precipitation forecasts over equatorial eastern Africa (hereafter referred to as EA, 2°S to 8°N and 36°E to 46°E). Due to recent declines in MAM rainfall, increases in population, land degradation, and limited technological advances, this region has become a rece…
