  • Forwarding forest restoration

    Open Access•Mariana C Hernández-Montilla Mariana C Hernández-Montilla, Mariana…•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2026

Restoring forests can help conserve biodiversity, mitigate climate change and enhance human well‐being. Despite financial and political support for global forest restoration initiatives, projects continue to face persistent challenges and trade‐offs between environmental, climatic and socio‐economic goals. To better understand existing and future challenges and opportunities, we convened a diverse panel of 25 international experts from academia, …

  • A convergence research approach to resolving ‘wicked problems’

    Open Access•J A Devine, Nicholas Magliocca et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Geography•2025

Many contemporary social and environmental problems are increasingly ‘wicked.’ Convergence research offers an effective approach to tackle wicked problems by integrating diverse epistemologies, methodologies, and expertise. Yet, there exists little discussion of how to develop and employ a convergence research approach. This article describes our collaborative research efforts to achieve convergence research and team science. For over a decade, w…

  • Multiple pathways of commodity crop expansion in tropical forest landscapes

    Open Access•Patrick Meyfroidt, K M Carlson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2014

Commodity crop expansion, for both global and domestic urban markets, follows multiple land change pathways entailing direct and indirect deforestation, and results in various social and environmental impacts. Here we compare six published case studies of rapid commodity crop expansion within forested tropical regions. Across cases, between 1.7% and 89.5% of new commodity cropland was sourced from forestlands. Four main factors controlled pathway…

  • Land cover dynamics following a deforestation ban in northern Costa Rica

Open Access•Matthew E Fagan, Ruth Defries et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2013

Forest protection policies potentially reduce deforestation and re-direct agricultural expansion to already-cleared areas. Using satellite imagery, we assessed whether deforestation for conversion to pasture and cropland decreased in the lowlands of northern Costa Rica following the 1996 ban on forest clearing, despite a tripling of area under pineapple cultivation in the last decade. We observed that following the ban, mature forest loss decreas…
