  • Management and biodiversity conservation in Central European forests

Open Access•Robert Jandl, Elena Haeler et al.•ARTICLE•Trees Forests and People•2024

Active forest management and maintenance or restoration of biodiversity are intertwined. We describe several Central European forest types through typical management cycles and identify synergies and trade-offs with biodiversity conservation. Synergies emerge when the maintenance of forest structures supporting recognized human needs for biomass production create diverse habitats. On the stand level, relevant are tending interventions during stan…

  • Mapping certified forests for sustainable management - A global tool for information improvement through participatory and collaborative mapping

Open Access•Florian Kraxner, Dmitry Schepaschenko et al.•ARTICLE•Forest Policy and Economics•2017•Cited by: 6•References: 1

There are currently no spatially explicit, openly accessible data available on forest certification below national level, so understanding the drivers of certification in the past, examining the scope for further certification and using this information for development of future sustainable forest management strategies is challenging. Hence, this paper presents a methodology for the development of a global map of certified forest areas at 1 km re…

  • The marker quantification of the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 2

    Open Access•Oliver Fricko, Peter Havlík et al.•ARTICLE•Global Environmental Change•2016•Cited by: 58•References: 10

Studies of global environmental change make extensive use of scenarios to explore how the future can evolve under a consistent set of assumptions. The recently developed Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) create a framework for the study of climate-related scenario outcomes. Their five narratives span a wide range of worlds that vary in their challenges for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Here we provide background on the quantificati…

  • Ecosystem services and economic development in Austrian agricultural landscapes — The impact of policy and climate change scenarios on trade-offs and synergies

Open Access•Mathias Kirchner, Johannes Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2015

  • Choice of forest map has implications for policy analysis

    Open Access•Lucia Seebach, Ian Mccallum et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 3

  • Harmonization of land-use scenarios for the period 1500–2100

    Open Access•G C Hurtt, Louise Chini et al.•ARTICLE•Climatic Change•2011

In preparation for the fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the international community is developing new advanced Earth System Models (ESMs) to assess the combined effects of human activities (e.g. land use and fossil fuel emissions) on the carbon-climate system. In addition, four Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios of the future (2005–2100) are being provided by four Integrated …

  • Global land-use implications of first and second generation biofuel targets

Open Access•Peter Havlík, Petr Havlík et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Policy•2011

  • RCP 8.5—A scenario of comparatively high greenhouse gas emissions

Open Access•Keywan Riahi, Shilpa Rao et al.•ARTICLE•Climatic Change•2011

This paper summarizes the main characteristics of the RCP8.5 scenario. The RCP8.5 combines assumptions about high population and relatively slow income growth with modest rates of technological change and energy intensity improvements, leading in the long term to high energy demand and GHG emissions in absence of climate change policies. Compared to the total set of Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), RCP8.5 thus corresponds to the path…

  • Global cost estimates of reducing carbon emissions through avoided deforestation

Open Access•Georg Kindermann, Michael Obersteiner et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2008

Tropical deforestation is estimated to cause about one-quarter of anthropogenic carbon emissions, loss of biodiversity, and other environmental services. United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change talks are now considering mechanisms for avoiding deforestation (AD), but the economic potential of AD has yet to be addressed. We use three economic models of global land use and management to analyze the potential contribution of AD activi…
