AI as a differentiated cognitive partner in medical education
OBJECTIVE: This study compared the efficacy of Popular Science (PS) and Research-Based (RS) curriculum extensions in a Histology and Embryology course, and explored how artificial intelligence (AI) tools can be designed as differentiated cognitive partners to support distinct pedagogical goals. METHODS: Two parallel first-year clinical medicine classes (N = 118) were non-randomly assigned to PS (n = 60) and RS (n = 58) arms. The PS group complete…
Exploring stroke risk factors in different genders using Bayesian networks
The exploration of stroke risk factors provides crucial information for healthcare planning and priority setting. This study aims to utilize Bayesian network modeling to explore stroke risk factors in different genders. We collected data from 10 cities and 13 counties in Shanxi Province, China, through questionnaire surveys, physical examinations, and laboratory tests. Logistic regression and Bayesian modeling were employed to analyze the risk fa…
Trade of crop products contribute to the alleviation of global nitrate leaching risks
Ammonium enrichment in livestock manure driven by ammonia-abatement practices can reduce nitrous oxide emissions
Using the nexus approach to realise sustainable food systems
Challenges in assessing and managing multi-hazard risks
The latest evidence suggests that multi-hazards and their interrelationships (e.g., triggering, compound, and consecutive hazards) are becoming more frequent across Europe, underlying a need for resilience building by moving from single-hazard-focused to multi-hazard risk assessment and management. Although significant advancements were made in our understanding of these events, mainstream practice is still focused on risks due to single hazards …
A decentralized approach to model national and global food and land use systems
The achievement of several sustainable development goals and the Paris Climate Agreement depends on rapid progress towards sustainable food and land systems in all countries. We have built a flexible, collaborative modeling framework to foster the development of national pathways by local research teams and their integration up to global scale. Local researchers independently customize national models to explore mid-century pathways of the food a…
Fertilization strategies for abating N pollution at the scale of a highly vulnerable and diverse semi-arid agricultural region (Murcia, Spain)
Overuse of N fertilizers in crops has induced the disruption of the N cycle, triggering the release of reactive N (Nr) to the environment. Several EU policies have been developed to address this challenge, establishing targets to reduce agricultural Nr losses. Their achievement could be materialized through the introduction of fertilizing innovations such as incorporating fertilizer into soils, using urease inhibitors, or by adjusting N inputs to…
Awareness of mpox-related knowledge among men who have sex with men in China
Mpox-related knowledge is fairly low among men who have sex with men in China. China needs to spread knowledge to the public through multiple channels, especially in key populations (men who have sex with men, HIV-infected, etc.), and take preventive measures to effectively avoid outbreaks of mpox
Global, regional and national burden of male infertility in 204 countries and territories between 1990 and 2019
The global burden of male infertility has exhibited a steady increase from 1990 to 2019, as evidenced by the rising trends in ASPR and ASYR, particularly in the High-middle and Middle SDI regions. Notably, the burden of male infertility in these regions far exceeds the global average. Additionally, since 2010, there has been a notable upward trend in the burden of male infertility in Low and Middle-low SDI regions. Given these findings, it is imp…
How can diverse national food and land-use priorities be reconciled with global sustainability targets? Lessons from the Fable initiative
There is an urgent need for countries to transition their national food and land-use systems toward food and nutritional security, climate stability, and environmental integrity. How can countries satisfy their demands while jointly delivering the required transformative change to achieve global sustainability targets? Here, we present a collaborative approach developed with the FABLE—Food, Agriculture, Biodiversity, Land, and Energy—Consortium t…
Reforming China’s fertilizer policies
Reactive nitrogen (N) is a requisite nutrient for agricultural production, but results in greenhouse gas and air and water pollution. The environmental and economic impacts of N fertilizer use in China are particularly relevant, as China consumes the largest amount of N fertilizer in the world to meet its soaring food demand. Here, we use an agro-economic land system model (MAgPIE) in combination with a difference-in-differences econometric model…
Impacts of African swine fever on water quality in China
The outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in China has significantly reduced the country’s pig production capability, whilst also having far-reaching impacts on livestock products supply in the wider food system. Previous studies have quantified the potential long-terms impacts on food prices, however, little information is available regarding the direct short-term impacts on food system changes (livestock products supply and consumption patterns…

Soil properties alter plant and microbial communities to modulate denitrification rates in subtropical riparian wetlands
The capacity of riparian wetlands to remove nitrogen from upland runoff through the denitrification process is mainly controlled by soil properties and biological communities. However, the pathways or mechanisms by which soil properties and biological communities may regulate riparian denitrification rates are still largely unknown. Here, we measured the potential and unamended denitrification rates in sediments from riverine wetlands along a nit…
Regional material flow accounts for China
Over the last three decades, China has experienced the most dynamic economic development lifting living standards and resulting in fast‐growing use of natural resources. In the past, the focus has been on national MFA accounts which do not do justice to the second largest economy, home to 19% of the world population and having 30% of global material use. In this research, we calculate material extraction for China at the regional level during 199…
China’s pig relocation in balance
Mitigation options to reduce nitrogen losses to water from crop and livestock production in China
How China’s nitrogen footprint of food has changed from 1961 to 2010
People have increased the amount of reactive nitrogen (Nr) in the environment as a result of food production methods and consumption choices. However, the connection between dietary choices and environmental impacts over time has not yet been studied in China. Here we combine a nitrogen footprint tool, the N-Calculator, with a food chain model, NUFER (NUtrient flows in Food chains, Environment and Resources use), to analyze the N footprint of foo…

Alarming nutrient pollution of Chinese rivers as a result of agricultural transitions
Transitions in Chinese agriculture resulted in industrial animal production systems, disconnected from crop production. We analyzed side-effects of these transitions on total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and phosphorus (TDP) inputs to rivers. In 2000, when transitions were ongoing, 30%-70% of the manure was directly discharged to rivers (range for sub-basins). Before the transition (1970) this was only 5%. Meanwhile, animal numbers more than doubled.…

Is There an Essential Difference between Intercultural and Intracultural Communication
In this paper, I put into question the idea that there is an essential difference between intercultural communication and intracultural communication. After considering dominating assumptions and ideas leading to this dichotomy, I argue that communication should be explored in terms of particular instances of human action and reaction that are embedded in concrete life situation, and that culture should not be taken as a seamless whole which can …
