  • Continental-scale climate forcing factors and environmental change at Glimmerglass Lake in the upper Peninsula of Michigan

    Open Access•Richard B Brugam, Beth Owen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Previous palaeoecological studies have shown that there have been major range shifts in Tsuga (hemlock) during the middle and late Holocene that seem to indicate climatic cooling and an increase in available moisture. We examined lake-level changes and peatland growth at Glimmerglass Lake and peatland in the Sylvania Wilderness Area to determine if the mid-Holocene increase in moisture indicated by the pollen record also influenced lakes and wetl…

  • Diatom indicators of peatland development at Pogonia Bog Pond, Minnesota, USA

    Open Access•Richard B Brugam, Patricia Swain•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Sediment cores were taken from the central pond and fringing mat of a Sphagnum peatland located in the Big Woods vegetation type. Pollen analysis of the pond core spanning 12 000 cal. BP to the present indicated a mid-postglacial warm period (10 000 to 3900 cal. BP at this site), when the area was covered by open oak woodland and prairie. From 3900 to 300 cal. BP oak forest expanded. At 300 cal. BP (ad 1650) Big Woods species (e.g., Tilia, Ostrya…

  • Holocene Environmental Changes in Lily Lake, Minnesota Inferred from Fossil Diatom and Pollen Assemblages

    Open Access•Richard B Brugam, Eric C Grimm et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1988

A postglacial core was taken from Lily Lake, a soft-water lake, located on carbonate-poor till in eastern Minnesota. Pollen analysis allowed the reconstruction of watershed vegetation change. Diatom assemblages from the core were compared with 255 surface sediment assemblages from Minnesota, Maine, Labrador, and the Canadian arctic. Late-glacial assemblages were similar to Canadian arctic lakes. During the mid-postglacial period of warmer and dri…

  • Postglacial Diatom Stratigraphy of Kirchner Marsh, Minnesota

    Open Access•Richard B Brugam•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1980

Fossil diatom assemblages from a 12-m core from Kirchner Marsh were compared with modern surface assemblages from 159 Minnesota and Labrador lakes using cluster analysis. The deepest levels of the core (spruce pollen zone 13,000 to 10,200 yr B.P.) resemble modern diatom assemblages from deep oligotrophic lakes of northeastern Minnesota. Diatom assemblages of the pine pollen zone (about 10,200 to 9500 yr B.P.) have few modern analogs. In the oak z…

  • Pollen Indicators of Land-Use Change in Southern Connecticut

    Open Access•Richard B Brugam•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1978

Changes in fossil pollen assemblages from a 2-m core from Linsley Pond, North Branford, Connecticut, are compared with historically documented land use changes in the lake watershed. Dating with 210 Pb and 14 C reveals two sedimentation rate changes in the core which are associated with the arrival of European farmers; the building of cabins and suburban housing subdivisions on the lake shore. At European settlement in 1700 ad Ambrosia and Rumex …
