  • Crustal subsidence inferred from reconstruction of the Pleistocene–Holocene palaeogeography in the northern Lake Inba area, central Japan

Open Access•Takashi Chiba, Shigeo Sugihara et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

To help characterise the palaeogeographic and lacustrine environmental changes that resulted from the Holocene transgression and residual subsidence in the eastern Kanto Plain of central Japan, we analysed four drill cores and reviewed other core data from the southern part of the Lake Inba area. Fossil diatom assemblages yielded evidence of centennial-scale palaeogeographic and salinity responses to sea-level changes since the late Pleistocene. …

  • Millennial-scale crustal movements inferred from Holocene sedimentary succession of the Omoto plain, northern Sanriku coast, Northeast Japan

Open Access•Yuichi Niwa, Toshihiko Sugai et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2019

  • Subsidence along the central to southern Sanriku coast, northeast Japan, near the source region of the 2011 Tohoku-oki earthquake, estimated from the Holocene sedimentary succession along a ria coast

Open Access•Yuichi Niwa, Toshihiko Sugai et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Seismic or hydrodynamic control of rapid late-Holocene sea-level rises in southern coastal Oregon, USA

    Open Access•Alan R Nelson, Yôko Ôta et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Intertidal stratigraphy has been instrumental in demonstrating the hazard posed by great earthquakes at the Cascadia subduction zone, but inferring an earthquake history from interbedded sequences of peat and mud is complicated by many factors that influence sedimentation and relative sea-level change on both tectonic and nontectonic coasts. Rapid-to-sudden rises in relative sea level marked by sharp contacts between intertidal peat and overlying…

  • Evidence for a Holocene High Sea-Level Stand, Vanua Levu, Fiji

Open Access•Takao MIYATA, Yasuo Maeda et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1990

Two distinct elevations of emerged notches can be recognized on the southeastern coast of Vanua Levu: the higher notch is +2.22 to +3.30 m above low-tide level and the lower +1.52 to +1.65 m above low-tide level. Many emerged Holocene corals encrust higher notch floors and benches or occur as microatolls and from these radiocarbon ages ranging from 6000 to 3400 yr B.P. were obtained. The higher notches are significantly higher than present high-t…
