Commentary on the Book The Nehrus in Prison by Mushirul Hasan (OUP, 2016)
Countless books and essays have been written on Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, and his achievements. He is regarded as one of the founding fathers of Independent India alongside M. K. Gandhi, Abul Kalam Azad and B. R. Ambedkar. Many books and essays have also been written on his family, often called India’s first family. The Nehrus had to leave their property and livelihood, had to spend months and years in jail and had to suffer…
Democracy, Not Majoritarianism
In this article, I first narrate the key features of democracy and the three types of democracy as conceptualised by Dr Ambedkar: political, social and economic. These three types of democracy depend upon each other, and if one is damaged, the rest cannot function properly. Equality and fraternity are two key themes that inform his concepts of social and economic democracies. In the next section of the article, I move on to discuss minority right…

Ambedkarization and Dalit Assertion
More than two decades ago, political scientist Jagpal Singh coined the term "Ambedkarization" to describe a process happening in west Uttar Pradesh. This was about the increasing presence of the images and ideas of one of the founding fathers of India, B. R. Ambedkar, among the Dalits of west Uttar Pradesh. This was based on Singh's fieldwork in Meerut district between 1992 and 1994. My article revisits the concept and tries to find out its relev…

Democracy, Development and Political Representation
This article takes three concepts, namely ‘democracy’, ‘development’ and ‘political representation’ as entry points to understand the functioning of democracy in Uttar Pradesh. India, since the 1980s, has seen a tremendous rise of ‘lowered’ caste people and a parallel rise of Hindu communalism by ‘upper’ castes. In this respect, it becomes pertinent to ask if the rise of plebeians in Uttar Pradesh’s political sphere brought about any actual chang…

Politics of Inclusion
Politics of Inclusion (2009) is an unusual book as its major arguments are not merely valid but are increasingly relevant. Published over a decade ago, it remains a must read for policymakers, political scientists and developmental experts. This review essay has tried to lay down eight key arguments that the book made. These are expanding the ambit of the definition of discrimination from only historical to both past and present forms; accepting …
