  • Regional And Watershed-Scale Coherence In the Stable-Oxygen and Carbon Isotope Ratio Time Series In Tree Rings Of Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)

    John S Roden, James A Johnstone et al.•ARTICLE•Tree-Ring Research•2011

Coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) ecosystems are strongly influenced by the presence of summer marine fog, and variation in fog frequency is closely linked to climate variation in the NE Pacific region. Because oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of organic matter records distinct water sources (e.g. summertime fog vs. winter precipitation) and carbon isotopes (δ13C) are typically sensitive to humidity and water status, it then follows that inte…

  • Intra-annual variation in the stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios of cellulose in tree rings of coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)

    Open Access•John S Roden, James A Johnstone et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2009•References: 3

Fog is a seasonally variable hydrologic input to coast redwood ( Sequoia sempervirens, D. Don) ecosystems with a stable isotopic composition (δ 18 O, δ 2 H) that is distinct from rainfall. The intra-annual variation in tree ring cellulose δ 18 O of coast redwood was measured to determine what portion of the tree ring should be sampled to best target fog signals. Ten years of rings were subdivided into ten equal units for three trees at two sites …
