  • Diatom-based paleoproductivity and climate change record of the Gulf of Tehuantepec (Eastern Tropical Pacific) during the last ~500 years

    Open Access•Laura Almaraz-Ruiz, María Luisa Machain-Castillo et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023

Changes in marine productivity of the last five centuries in the Gulf of Tehuantepec were investigated using a high-resolution record of diatoms, organic carbon (C org ), total nitrogen (TN), Ni/Al, and Cu/Al. The laminated sediments were dated by using 210 Pb and 14 C, with a bayesian age model providing a new Δ R = 247 ± 30 years for the bulk sediment. The Little Ice Age (LIA) (~1500 to ~1858 CE) was characterized by the predominance of cold-wa…

  • Paleoceanographic evolution of the Gulf of Tehuantepec (Mexican Pacific) during the last ~6 millennia

    Open Access•Ángela García-Gallardo, María Luisa Machain-Castillo et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•References: 4

Oceanographic dynamics in the Gulf of Tehuantepec (GT) are the direct consequence of climate variability, mainly influenced by the strong wind regime locally called “Tehuanos” and the interactions between the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The area is characterized by intense upwelling driven by the Tehuanos within one of the largest Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZ) in the world. Upwelling carries nutrien…

  • Accretion rates in coastal wetlands of the southeastern Gulf of California and their relationship with sea-level rise

    Open Access•Ana Carolina Ruiz-Fernández, Joan-Albert Sanchez-Cabeza et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Sea-level rise (SLR) is one of the most conspicuous examples of the environmental impact of recent climate change. Since SLR rates are not uniform around the planet, local and regional data are needed for proper adaptation plans. 210 Pb-dated sediment cores were analyzed to determine the trends of sediment accretion rates (SARs) at three tropical saltmarshes in the Estero de Urias lagoon (Gulf of California, Mexico), in order to estimate the SLR …
