  • A 1000-yr record of forest fire activity from Eclipse Icefield, Yukon, Canada

    Open Access•Kaplan Yalcin, Cameron P Wake et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 4•References: 4

A 1000-yr record of forest fire activity has been developed using three annually dated ice cores from Eclipse Icefield, Yukon, Canada. Forest fire signals were identified as NH 4 plus residuals above a robust spline and corroborated by an empirical orthhogonal function (EOF) analysis that identified a chemical association in the NH 4 plus , C 2 0 4 2 macr and K plus records similar to that observed in forest fire plumes. These statistical techniq…

  • Major features and forcing of high‐latitude northern hemisphere atmospheric circulation using a 110,000‐year‐long glaciochemical series

    Open Access•Paul A Mayewski, L David Meeker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Geophysical Research:…•1997

The Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 glaciochemical series (sodium, potassium, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, sulfate, nitrate, and chloride) provides a unique view of the chemistry of the atmosphere and the history of atmospheric circulation over both the high latitudes and mid‐low latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Interpretation of this record reveals a diverse array of environmental signatures that include the documentation of anthropogenicall…

  • A 110,000-Yr Record of Explosive Volcanism from the Gisp2 (Greenland) Ice Core

    Open Access•Gregory A Zielinski, Paul A Mayewski et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1996

The time series of volcanically produced sulfate from the GISP2 ice core is used to develop a continuous record of explosive volcanism over the past 110,000 yr. We identified ∼850 volcanic signals (700 of these from 110,000 to 9000 yr ago) with sulfate concentrations greater than that associated with historical eruptions from either equatorial or mid-latitude regions that are known to have perturbed global or Northern Hemisphere climate, respecti…

  • Biomass burning recorded in the Gisp2 ice core

    Open Access•K C Taylor, Paul A Mayewski et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1996•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Combustion byproducts from biomass burning are preserved in annually stratified layers in the Greenland ice sheet. Electrical conductivity (ECM) and ammonium records from the GISP2 ice core in central Greenland have been used to develop a 6000-year record of biomass burning. Although there is some uncer tainty regarding the source area for the combustion byproducts, it is likely that the majority of the material originates in eastern Canada. Time…

  • Complexity of Holocene Climate as Reconstructed from a Greenland Ice Core

    Open Access•S R O'Brien, Suzanne O’Brien et al.•ARTICLE•Science•1995

Glaciochemical time series developed from Summit, Greenland, indicate that the chemical composition of the atmosphere was dynamic during the Holocene epoch. Concentrations of sea salt and terrestrial dusts increased in Summit snow during the periods 0 to 600, 2400 to 3100, 5000 to 6100, 7800 to 8800, and more than 11,300 years ago. The most recent increase, and also the most abrupt, coincides with the Little Ice Age. These changes imply that eith…

  • Evidence of the Eldgjá (Iceland) eruption in the Gisp2 Greenland ice core

    Open Access•Gregory A Zielinski, Mark S Germani et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Glaciochemical studies and the evaluation of tephra in the GISP2 ice core provide information on the characteristics and potential environmental and climatic effects of the mid- to late AD 930s voluminous fissure eruption of Eldgjá, Iceland. The similarity in the chemical composition of basaltic glass shards found in a section of core dated at AD 938 ± 4 compared to proximal glass from the Eldgjá eruption verifies the presence of Eldgjá debris. A…

  • Atmospheric Aerosol Loading and Transport Due to the 1783-84 Laki Eruption in Iceland, Interpreted from Ash Particles and Acidity in the Gisp2 Ice Core

    Open Access•R Joseph Fiacco, T Thórdarson et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Glass shards from the A.D. 1783 Laki fissure eruption in Iceland have been identified in the GISP2 ice core from Summit, Greenland, at a level just preceding the major acidity/sulfate peak. Detailed reconstruction of ice stratigraphy, coupled with analyses of solid particles from filtered samples, indicate that a small amount of Laki ash was carried via atmospheric transport to Greenland in the summer of 1783, whereas the main aerosol precipitati…
