  • A sequence of abrupt climatic fluctuations in the north-eastern Caribbean related to the 8.2 ka event

    Open Access•Rolf Vieten, Sophie Warken et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 20

A speleothem collected from Palco Cave (Puerto Rico) spans the 8.2 ka event, a time interval associated with fluctuations of Atlantic Ocean circulation and possible drying in the Caribbean region. While stalagmite δ 18 O, δ 13 C, and Mg/Ca data do not show a sustained change in mean state over the 8.2 ka event, the proxies provide robust evidence for three abrupt fluctuations toward drier conditions in rapid succession, each lasting less than two…

  • Assessment of radiative heating errors in Tropical Atmosphere Ocean array marine air temperature measurements

Open Access•Francesco De Rovere, Davide Zanchettin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

We assess the radiative heating error affecting marine air temperature (MAT) measurements in the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean array. The error in historical observations is found to be ubiquitous across the array, spatially variable and approximately stationary in time. The error induces spurious warming during daytime hours, but does not affect night-time temperatures. The range encompassing the real, unknown daily- and monthly-mean values is deter…

  • Disentangling the causes of the 1816 European year without a summer

Open Access•Andrew Schurer, Gabriele C Hegerl et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2019

The European summer of 1816 has often been referred to as a ‘year without a summer’ due to anomalously cold conditions and unusual wetness, which led to widespread famines and agricultural failures. The cause has often been assumed to be the eruption of Mount Tambora in April 1815, however this link has not, until now, been proven. Here we apply state-of-the-art event attribution methods to quantify the contribution by the eruption and random wea…

  • European summer temperatures since Roman times

    Open Access•Jürg Luterbacher, J Werner et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

The spatial context is criticalwhen assessing present-day climate anomalies, attributing them to potential forcings and making statements regarding their frequency and severity in a long-term perspective. Recent international initiatives have expanded the number of high-quality proxy-records and developed new statistical reconstruction methods. These advances allow more rigorous regional past temperature reconstructions and, in turn, the possibil…

  • Volcanic forcing as a major source of European regional decadal climate variability during the last millennium

  • Climate response to the Toba super-eruption: Regional changes

    Open Access•Claudia Timmreck, Hans-F Graf et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • The Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Atlantic Multid-ecadal Oscillation: How much close during the last millennium
