Totalitarian Encounters: The Reception of Stalinism and the USSR in Fascist Italy, 1928–1936
Few scholars have ventured into the realm of the reception and representations of the USSR among Italian Fascists during the years 1928–36; that is, between Stalin's consolidation of power and the Spanish Civil War. This article contends that far from being absolute antagonists from the very beginnings, many Fascists found aspects of Stalinism and the USSR instructive and impressive. While for some the USSR represented a genuine attempt to revolu…
Giovanni Battista Montini (Paul VI): From the legacy of Christian Democracy to the encounter with fascism, 1925–33
This article seeks to address Giovanni Battista Montini's attitude towards the Christian Democrat party of the day‐the PPI‐ and his reactions to the Fascist movement and regime between 1925 and 33. Contrary to most observers, the article argues that the future Paul VI was not a Christian Democrat at heart. With regard to his anti‐Fascism, the article aims to qualify his attitudes and concludes that these were of a strong moralistic and religious …
Delphi Method to Achieve Clinical Consensus for a BPMN Representation of the Central Venous Access Placement for Training Purposes
The proposed methodology proved to be simple and effective, generating a graphic representation to represent activities, decision points, and alternative paths. The “New Man” in Radical Right Ideology and Practice, 1919–45
Bringing together an expert group of established and emerging scholars, this book analyses the pervasive myth of the ‘new man’ in various fascist movements and far-right regimes between 1919 and 1945. Through a series of ground-breaking case studies focusing on countries in Europe, but with additional chapters on Argentina, Brazil and Japan, The "New Man" in Radical Right Ideology and Practice, 1919-45 argues that what many national forms of far-…
The Myth of the New Man in Italian Fascist Ideology
This article addresses the key concept of the New Man within Fascist ideology, often considered as means and end of the Fascist revolution by the Fascists. Usually dismissed as an empty slogan by historians, it is argued in the following pages that the myth of the New Man is essential for a better understanding of the regime’s totalitarian and revolutionary aspirations along with its quest of creating an alternative modernity and a post-liberal a…
Italianness during Fascism: The case of Il Selvaggio
This article deals with the notion of Italianness in the Fascist journal Il Selvaggio (1924–43). It sets out to do this through the examination of the concepts of Fascist purity and intransigence, the nation's purported vices and virtues, and the publication's idiosyncratic belief in an Italian road to modernity as a means of regenerating the national character. While it is claimed that the latter goal ultimately failed, the article argues that t…
The Intellectuals of Italian Catholic Action and the Sacralisation of Politics in 1930s Europe
There has been a growing revival of interest in the subject of political religion in recent years. However, despite this tendency, the perspective of contemporary Italian Catholics on the subject has hardly been touched upon, except by Emilio Gentile and Renato Moro. This article addresses this gap, analysing the response to the phenomenon of political religions during the 1930s by the two intellectual branches of Italian Catholic Action, namely,…
Catholic students at war: The Federazione Universitaria Cattolica Italiana, 1940–43
This article deals with the religious experience of the Federazione Universitaria Cattolica Italiana during the Second World War. Since many of the future Christian Democrat leaders that would rule the country after the conflict were formed in the ranks of the organization, most of the existing literature has tended to focus on the formation of this ruling class and their political trajectory and, has tended to overstate the origins and character…
