Recent histories of the professionalization of interior design: From gatekeeping to inclusion
Studies of the professionalization of interior design have emphasized the role of education, regulation, accreditation, peer review, publication, and other forms of promotion and gatekeeping as central to understanding the development of the field. But if professions are understood simply as loci of gatekeeping, exclusion and normativity, they risk obstructing the achievement of equality or equity, diversity and inclusion. This article adds to ex…

It's Personal: Subjectivity in Design History
The practices of design, our experiences of their outcomes, as well as the narratives we create about them, are all deeply personal—and therefore subjective. Postmodern theory might have finally killed off the utopian ideal of history as an objective science, but it has arguably left a vacuum, with no comprehensive debate on the role of subjectivity in history writing and its potential challenges and benefits. As scholars we are trained to put as…
Why design history? A multi-national perspective on the state and purpose of the field
This article asks: what is the significance of design history within higher education? It reviews the practice and purpose of design history, in the education of historically aware and critically engaged designers, as an emerging independent discipline, and in terms of what the subject has to offer allied fields such as history, sociology, cultural studies, history of technology, area studies and anthropology. It considers the development and cur…

Accommodating ‘Mrs. Three‐in‐One’: Homemaking, home entertaining and domestic advice literature in post‐war Britain
This article analyses the effects of the ‘servant problem’, meaning the contraction of the domestic service industry in the twentieth century, as represented in domestic advice literature (etiquette, homemaking and home decoration books). Before World War II, domestic advisors assumed that readers employed staff, while by the 1970s no such assumption could be made. Managing a home unassisted, especially when entertaining guests in the role Americ…
Italianità and internationalism: Production, design and mediation at Alessi, 1976-96
This article considers the Italian household product design company Alessi as quintessentially Italian and international. The interplay of mass-production and craft techniques at Alessi, an extended design process and the presentation of the family in company publicity exemplify the ambiguities identified within Italian design. The extent to which Alessi typifies Italian post-war design is questioned with reference to the company's international …
