  • Czech, Polish or Central European? Contribution to the Czech-Polish Contacts at the End of the 9th - the First Half of the 11th Century. Archaeological Perspective

    Naďa Profantová•ARTICLE•Światowit•2025

This paper will focus on a few lesser-known cases of men’s equipment in Bohemia, which may have originated from Poland or Central Europe. However, we know them mostly from male graves in Poland: a sword of type S, stirrups, a miniature axe, or a fitting of the scabbards with animal heads or with animal figures. Czech exclusive finds, such as a sword or stirrup from Dobruška- Běstviny, could be a gift as well as evidence of the movement of concret…

  • The beginnings of S-shaped temple rings in Bohemia from the perspective of archaeological analysis and radiocarbon dating

Open Access•Nikola Koštová, Kateřina Tomková et al.•ARTICLE•Archeologické rozhledy•2025

Jewellery represents important evidence not only for the reconstruction of fashion and cultural development but also provides significant support for the chronology of the periods studied. This paper is focused on the issue of dating the beginning of the appearance of early medieval S-shaped temple rings. It summarises the existing idea of dating from an archaeological perspective, mainly based on a comparative analysis of the occurrence of S-sha…

  • The die for the production of the hammered kaptorgas from Kouřim, Central Bohemia

Open Access•Naďa Profantová, Daniel Dvořáček et al.•ARTICLE•Archeologické rozhledy•2024

Kaptorgas were small trapezoidal boxes with lids worn by women and girls in early medieval central Europe as magic or protective amulets. The paper presents a new find of a bronze cast die for hammering the front side of kaptorgas, which was excavated at the Nad Dolnicí settlement site located in the hinterland of the important central Bohemian hillfort of Kouřim. The die was used to produce type 1A kaptorgas with a motif of a four-legged eared g…

  • Tismice jako produkční a nadregionální centrum Čech 8. a 9. století Tismice as a Production and Supra-Regional Centre of Bohemia in the 8th and 9th Centuries

Open Access•Naďa Profantová, Roman Křivánek et al.•ARTICLE•Památky archeologické•2020

The central Bohemian hillfort-type site in Tismice is one of the largest (20–22 ha) in Bohemia from the Early to Middle Hillfort period (8th–9th century) and has been studied for years using non-destructive methods. The study, which presents the results of the complete geophysical survey of the site as well as the results of small-scale trenching from 2013, is focussed on an analysis of non-ferrous metal ornaments (c. 170 pcs., mostly belt and ho…

  • Nová stříbrná kaptorga ze středních Čech v souvislosti s konkrétním výrobním okruhem(?) v Praze

Open Access•Naďa Profantová, David Daněček•ARTICLE•Slavia Antiqua Rocznik poświęcony…•2018

In response to the new find of a small silver trapezoid casket — i.e. kaptorga — from the grave of female H 2103 from Hostivice-Palouky, we focused our paper on the small group of such amulet caskets from Central Bohemia, decorated with engraved animal motifs on a punched background and with a knot made with the assistance of a pair of compasses on their lids and dated to the 2nd half of the 10th century. The kaptorga from Hostivice belongs to th…

  • Pohanský idol z Kouřimi, Česká republika Poganski idol s Kouřima, Češka republika

    Open Access•Naďa Profantová•ARTICLE•Studia mythologica Slavica•2012

The paper considers the findings about the archaeologically detectable pre-Christian manifestation in the hill-fort of Kouřim/Kurim in the 10th century written report in Middle Bohemia. The small non-complete stone »idol«(post), 17 cm in hight, is published in the article. It is decorated in two lines: The upper brings 5 faces (human masks), the lower one shows two smaller complete faces with headbands, originally it consisted of 6. The stone ido…

  • Archeology and written sources on eighth‐ to tenth‐century Bohemia

    Open Access•Naďa Profantová•ARTICLE•Early Medieval Europe•2009•Cited by: 2

This article examines the contribution of archaeology to our understanding of the history of Bohemia in the early Middle Ages. In a period for which only scarce information is available from written sources, archaeology is able to verify information from legend and confirm the scanty written evidence. The results of archaeological research, however, also strongly suggest that relations between Bohemians and Magyars were much more complex than the…
