West Bengal, a culturally diverse state, hosts numerous folk festivals predominantly associated with the identities of various social groups. Such a critical folk festival is Jhāpān, a long-celebrated tradition of snake charmers in Bengal. The festival never fails to echo local tradition through exhibiti…
History, structure and conjuncture: Imperialism and the polity in Pakistan
This paper develops Antonio Gramsci's distinction between organic and conjunctural terrains to delineate the relationship between imperialism and the polity in Pakistan. A political-economic analysis of the mechanisms and magnitude of unequal exchange and economic drain over the last three and a half decades is carried out through domestic and international data sources. This imperial-economic mooring is then brought into conversation with Pakist…
Spaces of melancholia, melancholias of space: Shifting structures of feeling in post-independence Karachi
This article draws upon Henri Lefebvre and Fredric Jameson to trace the shifting coordinates of social and spatial experience through novels set in Karachi (Pakistan). I bring Lefebvre's understanding of the “concrete abstraction” of space under capitalism together with Jameson's insights on the content and form of narratives to develop an understanding of “space” as constitutive to literary fiction. I then draw upon three major novels to trace t…

Stretch’ and ‘Translate’: Gramscian Lineages, Fanonist Convergences in the (Post)Colony
This paper establishes a theoretical linkage between Antonio Gramsci and Frantz Fanon. Gramsci’s critical-historicist method and its relationship to humanism, his integral understanding of Marxism, and emphasis on the moment of political practice resonate with Fanon’s articulation of the subjective and political-economic aspects of the colonial question, his activistic materialism, and his dialectically humanist universalism forged through anti-c…

Prevalence of low birth weight in India and its determinants: Insights from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), 2015-2016
The aetiology of low birth weight (LBW) is the outcome of complex interactions of numerous physical and environmental factors. Present study aims to identify the factors determining LBW in India as well as estimate the prevalence of LBW. The study used the data of latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS), a nationally representative sample consisting 81,869 ever married Indian women of reproductive age. Data on birth weight of the full-term si…
Socio-economic and reproductive concomitants of abdominal adiposity and hypertension: A study on Bengali-speaking Hindu women of Habra, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India
Obesity and hypertension have become a global epidemic among the women, especially as they experience additional stressful events compared to men. The epidemiology of these two metabolic disorders is regulated by various biological, socio-economic, reproductive and lifestyle factors related to women. However, inconsistency in the nature and magnitude of the effects of these traits indicates exploring the areas where little emphasis has been given…
From Partisan Universal to Concrete Universal? The Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement in Pakistan
This paper explores the question of universal‐particular through the anti‐war Pashtun Tahaffuz (Protection) Movement in Pakistan. With its demands couched in the language of pain, rights to life and “dignity”, the PTM mobilises popular Pashtun sentiments as a “partisan universal”: a political formulation which achieves the common good even as it attends to particular interests. However, within the re‐formulated urban question in post‐9/11 Pakista…
Effects of menstrual characteristics, symptoms and hygiene-related practices on menstrual experience: A comparative study between freeholder and tenant adolescent schoolgirls of North 24 Parganas, Wes…
Adolescence is a significant event in woman's life when the process of menstruation occurs with several physical, mental and physiological developments. Menstrual experience of women is largely determined by environmental factors occurring during this period. In India, disparities in numerous factors result in different menstrual characteristics, menstruation-related symptoms and menstrual hygiene-related practices. However, the effect of residen…

Spatial and Temporal Somatotype Variation in Oraon Tea Garden and Agricultural Labourers of Alipurduar District, West Bengal
Urban space and (the limits of) middle class hegemony in Pakistan
This paper aims to explore the emergence of reconstituted political subjectivities in urban Pakistan. Specifically, the paper will focus on an emerging hegemonic project which centers the socio-political articulations and aspirations of middle class fractions that have emerged in the country in the wake of post-1980s economic liberalisation. Detailed light will be shed upon the (proto-)hegemonic aspirations of a distinct fraction of the middle cl…
Beyond “Domination without Hegemony”: Passive revolution(s) in Pakistan
This paper delineates the problematic of state and civil society set out by Marx and Gramsci in its theoretical-conjunctural validity, as it relates to postcolonial social formations and especially post-1970s Pakistan. The Gramscian concepts of passive revolution, “boundary-traversing” hegemony, and the integral state are elaborated through references to three major theorists of postcolonial societies: Chatterjee, Alavi, and Fanon. The resulting …
