  • Methodological insights from the inside

Open Access•Åsa Hedlund, Maria Eriksson Wester et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

The paper outlines step by step the procedure of conducting group interviews with autistic people. We illustrate ways to capture the possibilities of autistic-friendly interviewing by working with-rather than against-autistic cognition, sociality, and communication styles in interviews with autistic people

  • A good autistic life

Open Access•Åsa Hedlund, Maria Eriksson Wester et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sociology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Through our autistic-led approach drawing on neurodiverse frames of analysis, our work presents a first initial investigation of autistic flourishing among women. Our findings suggest qualitative differences in autistic derived definitions of flourishing and its indicators compared to those of neurotypicals, emphasizing the importance of developing an autistic-driven understanding of flourishing

  • Women’s health and psychological well-being in the return-to-work process after long-term sick leave for common mental disorders

    Open Access•Åsa Hedlund, Marja‐Leena Kristofferzon et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Based on women's and first-line managers experiences, promotion of women's health and psychological well-being during the return-to-work process requires individually adapted assessments and actions involving women's entire life situation. First-line managers should know that relational work tasks (e.g., meeting patients) can be beneficial for women's health as well as that minor stressor in the work environment can put their health at risk

Open Access•Åsa Hedlund, Annika Nilsson et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Common mental disorders are associated with long-term sick leave, especially among women. There is a lack of theory-based research regarding the impact of personal factors on return to work and psychological well-being. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine whether return-to-work beliefs and perceived health were predictors of return to work and psychological well-being among women during or after long-term sick leave for common mental …

  • Are return to work beliefs, psychological well-being and perceived health related to return-to-work intentions among women on long-term sick leave for common mental disorders? A cross-sectional study …

    Open Access•Åsa Hedlund, Marja‐Leena Kristofferzon et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The RTW beliefs, derived from the Theory of Planned Behaviour, were all important for a strong RTW intention, while psychological well-being and perceived health showed weaker associations. Furthermore, having an employer that take actions for facilitating RTW was associated with stronger RTW intentions. Though some caution is warranted regarding the representativeness of the sample, the results do improve our understanding of some important dete…

  • An overlooked concept? Intention to return to work among individuals on sick leave due to common mental disorders

    Open Access•Åsa Hedlund•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2021

Intention to return to work (RTW) is an important predictor of actual RTW among individuals on sick leave in general. However, it is not known whether this is also the case for individuals with common mental disorders (CMDs). Because CMDs are a leading cause of disability worldwide, the RTW process is often more complex and sick leave periods are longer than for other diagnoses. Thus, it is important to focus solely on this group. The purpose of …
