Development of Online Professional Development for Teachers
Students with disabilities (SWDs) are disproportionately at-risk for bullying victimization and perpetration, yet there is a lack of educator-focused professional development targeting prevention for these students. This project sought to address gaps in training through the creation of four online professional development modules: (1) understanding bullying among SWDs, (2) examining risk characteristics, (3) establishing school and classroom pre…
Elementary School Staff Perspectives on Bullying Involvement among Students with Disabilities
Research indicates that students with disabilities (SWD) are more likely to be involved in bullying; therefore, the development of effective bullying prevention strategies need to consider the experiences of this population. Educators need the knowledge and skills to identify and intervene appropriately in bullying incidents involving SWD. Focus groups included 17 elementary school general and special education teachers, and counselors on their p…
Perspectives on quality of life among disability-related organization leaders serving individuals with paralysis
I'm a security professional, a counselor, a leader, and sometimes a father figure”
Schools are increasingly hiring full‐time, unarmed school security professionals (SSPs), who are different from School Resource Officers (SROs), to help facilitate safe and supportive school climates. However, there is a paucity of literature about how they describe and engage with social emotional learning (SEL), particularly equity‐focused or transformative SEL. The current study is a secondary data analysis using qualitative responses to conte…

The Insider Looking Out
This article is an autoethnographic performative account based on my story as a transnational adopted academic disabled scholar of color finding my own sense of personal and professional “home.” The format was constructed based on my previous work of specific movie scenes and corresponding dialogue appearing throughout the text. The resulting piece showcases the journey and the struggles to find and to intentionally build my home in the academy u…
Good morning, Twitter! What are you doing today to support the voice of people with #disability
Understanding Twitter by individuals and organizations to raise awareness and give voice to the disability community provides important insight into digital discourse around disability. This study examines #disability tweets shared during National Disability Employment Awareness Month in October 2018. Sourced and cleaned, English language tweets (n = 12,963) were analyzed through a mixed-methods approach. As the title of this paper, a tweet from …
Musings From the Streets of India
What is the appropriate method of "interviewing" individuals with more involved disabilities who are nonverbal? As part of a larger case study looking at inclusion in India for disabled1 girls, this work raises questions about what happens when we inadvertently or systematically privilege certain ways of communicating over others without providing accommodations or adaptions. This practice perpetuates ableism by only including some disabled voice…
(Re)defining disability culture
The present study examined the views of students with varying physical disabilities on disability culture in a post-Americans with Disability Act society. Qualitative, participatory research methods were used to observe approximately 30 disabled students and conduct in-depth interviews with four disabled students. The main objective was initially to answer the following question: Do disabled students recognize an identifiable disability culture a…
Disability
The data on violence against disabled people are scarce. The data on prevalence that does exist is staggering, however: disabled people make up one third to one half of all people killed by law enforcement and experience twice the rate of violence that others do. To study the relationships among ableism, violence, and disability as an intersectional identity, we use a DisCrit theoretical framework to conduct a selective review of three reports: a…
"You're Going to Do What?" Challenges of Autoethnography in the Academy

These challenges include (a) finding the author's voice, (b) negotiating university policies and procedures, and (c) addressing validity concerns for autoethnography. The resulting autoethnographic account captures vulnerable moments and incidents to produce an evocative story about becoming a pioneer. A fusion between s…
The influence of gang presence on victimization in one middle school environment
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand and describe the unique differences of both bullies and victims, through the eyes and stories of the participants, from this middle school. The Influence of Psychosocial Factors on Bullying Involvement of Students With Disabilities
The involvement of students with disabilities within the bullying dynamic has been recognized as a pressing issue within the nation's schools. Unfortunately, few studies have examined the psychosocial outcomes related to the bullying involvement of students with disabilities. However, involvement in bullying has been linked to negative short- and long-term outcomes for students with and without disabilities, increasing the necessity of exploring …
