“Inter and Enter
This performative and collaborative autoethnography plays with the homophonic or maybe homiletics of “inter” and “enter” as the invitational aspect of collaborative autoethnography. The contribution of diverse collaborators from differing racial, ethnic, geo-spatial locations, and generational standpoints speak to/between experiences with the dialogic aspects of autoethnography; the speaking of self with and for others that is always a part of au…
“Collaborative Autoethnographic Writing as Communal Curative”
This collaborative autoethnography reflects on how each author experienced COVID-19 and associated precarity. We explore the ways in which this experience relates to our identities (both particular and plural), and our positionalities in terms of privilege and marginality. As a collective of diverse collaborators, we confront dialectical questions of self and society. Our contributions reveal our advantage/disadvantage, mobility/immobility, and t…
Betweener
Inspired by Diversi & Moreira’s Betweener Talk and Betweener Autoethnographies, I employ poetic inquiry to sketch a nonessentialist position for research in the spaces between. My poetry is archival and it is poem-ish. Using repetition, I attempt to break through binary thinking, while simultaneously illustrating the difficulty in doing so. I seek possibility and potential in the twilit space of both/and rather than either/or. In-between spaces c…
How to see a superbloom
This is a DIY chapbook of poems crafted between 2018 and 2021. I write found poems and centos drawing from newspaper coverage of fires and flowers in California. If the land exerts agential influence on epistemologies and ontologies, and as climate change affects changes to the land, I ask what new epistemologies and ontologies must necessarily emerge. I see in the California superbloom a utopian performative (Dolan) that potentially points towar…
“I'm Sorry My Hair is Blocking Your Smile”
This performative essay is an instance of embodied writing, an assemblage by seven individuals responding to a shared moment from different perspectives on the politics of hair. In the process we engage the sociological imagination as we turn private troubles into public issues, or better yet, we collectively show how public issues are our private troubles
Avatar , Tar Sands, and Dad
This is an (auto)ethnographic performance inspired by a conversation with my father while leaving the theater after watching Avatar back in 2009. It is intended to be performed as readers’ theater. In it, I examine the role anthropology plays in the performance of imperialist nostalgia across the stories of James Cameron's film Avatar, Ursula K. Le Guin's novella The Word for World Is Forest, and Theodora Kroeber's Ishi in Two Worlds: A Biography…
Heart Murmur
In the summer of 2015, I lost my relationship (of four years) and then my Grandmother passed away, one after the other. Judith Butler says there is no ready vocabulary to describe the bonds by which one is connected to another, the ties by which we are "differentiated and related." Those ties constitute what we are, they compose us. This is an autoethnographic bricolage that examines those affective bonds that stand revealed when you lose someone…
John Wayne in the Irvine Ranch Farmers Market
The Western as a Hollywood film genre was born in and of California, as was I. This piece was “triggered” by a memory of an encounter with John Wayne in a market as a young child. Recognizing how (Western) stories can hold us in their grip, this is the beginning of a larger project of deconstructing my Western narrative to perform new articulations into being. I use the question, “Why don't I speak Spanish?” as the entry point to begin to unravel…
Extra-personal awareness through the media-rich environment
