  • Narrative development as symbol formation: Gestures, imagery and the emergence of cohesion

    Open Access•Elena T Levy, David Mcneill•ARTICLE•Culture & Psychology•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 17

We extend Werner and Kaplan’s (1963) account of early language development as symbol formation to the development of cohesion in young children’s narratives. We propose that the development of cohesion relies on imagistic gestures, specifically on gestural catchments – series of gestures (not necessarily continuous) with recurring features that embody discourse themes. Our argument is supported by the narratives of a child recorded and transcribe…

  • Constructing and pre-constructing coherent accounts of the social world

    Elena T Levy•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2011•Cited by: 1

This is a follow-up to an earlier article (Levy, 2008) on the microgenesis of narrative pre-construction (Labov, 2006) in elicited third-person retellings. As in the earlier study the focus is on the formation of anticipatory goal statements , summaries of characters’ motivations for their actions, feelings and beliefs. In the present study I examine how narrators construct inferences about characters’ mental states, comparing onto- and mesodevel…

  • Pre-construction of third-person elicited narratives: Relationships between short- and long-term language change

    Elena T Levy•ARTICLE•Narrative Inquiry•2008

Recently, Labov (2006) described a process of narrative pre-construction that must occur during the short period of time between a conversationalist’s question, “Where should I begin?,” and the start of a narrative of personal experience. The present article is concerned with the microgenesis of narrative pre-construction in elicited third-person retellings. The central proposal is that the microgenesis of anticipatory goal statements — summaries…

  • Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension of Language: Essays in honor of David McNeill

Susan D Duncan, Justine Cassell et al.•BOOK•Gesture and the Dynamic Dimension…•2007

Each of the 21 chapters in this volume reflects a view of language as a dynamic phenomenon with emergent structure, and in each, gesture is approached as part of language, not an adjunct to it. In this, all of the authors have been influenced by David McNeill's methods for studying natural discourse and by his theory of the human capacity for language. The introductory chapter by Adam Kendon contextualizes McNeill’s research paradigm within a his…

    Open Access•Elena T Levy•ARTICLE•Human Development•2003

  • The Roots of Coherence in Discourse

    Open Access•Elena T Levy•ARTICLE•Human Development•2003

This article is concerned with the emergence of logical coherence across children’s repetitions of their own narrative discourse. I propose that coherence does not emerge in isolation of language, but that it depends on the use and manipulation, in ongoing speech, of specific linguistic forms, such as the clause-linking devices that form part of the cohesive system, the text-forming component of language. Using observations from a young child’s s…

  • A Social-Pragmatic Account of the Development of Planned Discourse

    Open Access•Elena T Levy•ARTICLE•Human Development•1999

This article presents a social-pragmatic account of the emergence of planned discourse in development. The central claim is that planned discourse is a product of interactive emergence, arising in development from the creation of discourse themes, and that these in turn are dependent on language, especially on the linguistic subsystem of cohesion. I propose that the emergence of discourse themes relies on children’s use and elaboration, in sponta…

  • Cohesion and gesture

    David Mcneill, Elena T Levy•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1993•Cited by: 11•References: 12

Discourse cohesion is viewed from the perspective of a speech/gesture synthesis. Based on narrative and conversational data, we present cross‐cultural evidence of cohesive elements marked by repetitive gestures that maintain continuity with respect to their location in space, the hand with which they are produced, and/or their form. The data show the joint contribution made by speech and gesture to the process of creating and maintaining discours…

  • Speech, gesture, and discourse

    Elena T Levy, David Mcneill•ARTICLE•Discourse Processes•1992•Cited by: 12•References: 12

In this article we argue that on‐line linguistic choices are made in a matrix of continuous discourse connections. We investigate the hypothesis that communicative dynamism (CD) is this representation of the whole in the parts. We view CD as a graded variable that can be measured only with respect to large stretches of discourse. Based on our analysis of extended narrative and conversational data, we find that CD directly correlates with the quan…
