  • Intergenerational effects of parental wealth on children's housing wealth

    Open Access•Kang-Rae Ma, Kang‐Rae Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 18

Past research has shown a close association of housing characteristics between generations. Previous evidence on the similarity of homeownership and housing value between parents and children reflects that inheritances and intergenerational wealth transfers play important roles in reinforcing and extending wealth inequality across generations. The purpose of this study is to examine how housing wealth and the timing of initial homeownership are a…

  • Urban Spatial Change and Excess Commuting

    Open Access•Kang-Rae Ma, Kang‐Rae Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2007•Cited by: 9•References: 21

In this paper we revisit the excess-commuting technique and its links with urban form. The uncertainty in measurement is highlighted, as are the problems relating to changes in excess commuting over time. The measure of the theoretical maximum commute is proposed and added to the traditional excess-commuting measure so that the use of both the minimum and maximum levels can capture the concept of commuting potential. This measure is what we call …

  • Excess Commuting

    Kang‐Rae Ma, David Banister•ARTICLE•Transport Reviews•2006

Excess commuting is the additional journey‐to‐work travel represented by the difference between the actual average commute and the smallest possible average commute, given the spatial configuration of workplace and residential sites. Research on excess commuting has been carried out over the last 20 years since the seminal contribution of Hamilton (1982 Hamilton, B. W. 1982. Wasteful commuting. Journal of Political Economy, 90: 1035–1053. [Crossr…

  • Extended Excess Commuting

    Open Access•Kang-Rae Ma, Kang‐Rae Ma et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2006•Cited by: 12•References: 11

The balance between jobs and housing has received considerable attention in the recent debates over sustainable urban development. The excess commuting technique, which measures the difference between the average observed commute and the average minimum commute, has been suggested as one means to identify the numerical imbalance between workplaces and residential locations. This paper extends the conventional approach through the development of a…
