Rethinking cost–benefit analysis for transformative cycling policies
Transforming urban transport systems toward sustainability requires a critical re-evaluation of the appraisal methods used in policy analysis. While cycling infrastructure offers clear environmental, health, and livability benefits, its economic evaluation through cost–benefit analysis (CBA) remains underdeveloped. This paper presents a CBA of the “E-Bike City” concept in Zurich, which involves a radical reallocation of road space from cars to bi…
Analyzing travel time efficiency over long distance railway services throughout Europe
What influences cycling infrastructure preferences? A stated-preference survey
We examine the difference in preferences among different cyclist groups, being the first to examine differences in cycling infrastructure preferences among s-pedelec, e-bike and conventional bike riders. We also examine how the cycling frequency of individuals shapes these preferences. To do so we develop a stated-preference choice experiment varying cycling infrastructure and car traffic features impacting cycling for both main and neighborhood …
The e-biking in Switzerland (Ebis) study
This article presents the EBIS (e-Biking in Switzerland) study, including its methodology, the resulting dataset, and an initial descriptive analysis of the population surveyed. The EBIS study is a Switzerland-wide GPS-tracking study with the aim of investigating the scope of carbon savings in the transport sector due to e-biking. Participants consisted of cyclists and e-bikers across the French- and German-speaking regions of Switzerland. In add…
The E-Bike City as a radical shift toward zero-emission transport
This think piece discusses current barriers to the rapid decarbonization of transport and ways to overcome them. Policymakers face a set of contradictory goals, leading them to ponder only incremental measures: The need to reduce carbon emissions conflicts with accessibility improvements and the resulting induced traffic. At the same time, the prevention of urban sprawl as a means of promoting sustainable mobility is fundamentally thwarted by tec…
An accessibility-based methodology to identify corridor speed upgrades in the European rail network
