Border permeability and cross-border mobility in Europe, 1960–2020
This paper presents a long-term comparative assessment of border permeability across Europe at 10-year intervals between 1960 and 2020. Using a novel 10-point typology of border regimes, it traces spatio-temporal changes in border openness and their relation to the structural potential of cross-border mobility in adjacent regions, operationalised through demographic mass, economic attractiveness and other structural determinants. The results reve…
Transport poverty in Poland – a spatial approach to public transport demand and supply
The paper aims to provide an initial evaluation of transport poverty in Poland by examining both the demand and supply of public transport services at the municipal level. Due to the lack of comprehensive data, median earnings from the Central Statistical Office are used as a proxy for transport demand and income inequality, while a composite index of public transport accessibility (PTAI), incorporating three indicators, represents the supply sid…
National and regional potential accessibility convergence by decay and decades in Germany, France, Spain, Poland and Romania in the years of 1960–2020
The paper seeks to adapt methods of national and regional beta and sigma convergence from socio-economic sciences to a spatial framework. The process of reducing disparities in accessibility levels is commonly linked with the concept of territorial cohesion. We dynamically explore this concept by integrating economic terminology and applying it within a spatial context. This is accomplished through the utilization of beta and sigma accessibility …
Places that matter and places that don’t: Territorial revenge and counter-revenge in Poland
This article examines the persistence of territorial inequality and the challenges posed by growing geographic political polarisation, using Poland as a compelling case study. In 2015, the anti-elite and Eurosceptic PiS party came to power, holding it for eight years before losing to a broad coalition of liberal, centrist, and left-wing parties. We study the geography of this political shift by analysing parliamentary election results from 2011 t…
Ruch graniczny z Polski do Obwodu Kaliningradzkiego na tle pozostałych odcinków zewnętrznej granicy Unii Europejskiej: Border traffic from Poland to the Kaliningrad region in the context of other sect…
The purpose of the paper is to present the cross-border mobility of Poles in a broader context of social, economic changes and formal and political conditions. The mobility of Poles is presented on the example of border traffic on the Polish-Russian border. We compare the situation on the border with Kaliningrad oblast with other sections of the eastern border. We focus on number of crossings and the movement of passenger and heavy good vehicles …
Delineation of health care deserts using accessibility measures: The case of Poland
The designation of peripheral areas with poor access to health care services is a key criterion for possible support from various targeted programmes or strategies. The proper delineation of the periphery relies on many factors, including (1) the accessibility measure adopted (proximity approach, population percentage, cumulative accessibility, potential accessibility and accessibility measure with competition); (2) the type of medical service (p…
Regional dispersion of potential accessibility quotient at the intra-European and intranational level. Core-periphery pattern, discontinuity belts and distance decay tornado effect
The regional differences in the level of accessibility and GDP per capita in Europe are the subject of many scientific analyses and much applied research. Using the road network for the whole continent and the division of Europe into transport areas on the basis of NUTS 3, we have concentrated on the potential quotient as a research method. The quotient is a ratio of economic and population potential, and its level and spatial distribution differ…
