  • Following Old Routes in New Times: Ukrainian Refugees and Migration Patterns in Poland

Open Access•Rafał Wiśniewski, Marcin Mazur et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2026

Since the end of February 2022, most European Union countries have experienced a substantial inflow of refugees from Ukraine. The pace and scale of this movement are unprecedented. In some countries, such as Poland, this inflow has coincided with the presence of economic migrants who had arrived prior to the outbreak of the war. This article examines the spatial relationships between the inflow of Ukrainian refugees and (i) distance from the Ukra…

  • Transport poverty in Poland – a spatial approach to public transport demand and supply

    Open Access•Piotr Rosik, Patryk Duma•ARTICLE•Geographia Polonica•2025

The paper aims to provide an initial evaluation of transport poverty in Poland by examining both the demand and supply of public transport services at the municipal level. Due to the lack of comprehensive data, median earnings from the Central Statistical Office are used as a proxy for transport demand and income inequality, while a composite index of public transport accessibility (PTAI), incorporating three indicators, represents the supply sid…

  • National and regional potential accessibility convergence by decay and decades in Germany, France, Spain, Poland and Romania in the years of 1960–2020

Open Access•Piotr Rosik, Marcin Mazur et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The paper seeks to adapt methods of national and regional beta and sigma convergence from socio-economic sciences to a spatial framework. The process of reducing disparities in accessibility levels is commonly linked with the concept of territorial cohesion. We dynamically explore this concept by integrating economic terminology and applying it within a spatial context. This is accomplished through the utilization of beta and sigma accessibility …

  • Refugees from Ukraine in Poland—Differentiation of spatial distribution and impact on demographic structures

    Open Access•Rafał Wiśniewski, Barbara Szejgiec‐Kolenda et al.•ARTICLE•Population Space and Place•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 20

In late February 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine set‐off a tide of refugees heading west. The paper discusses the scale of the refugee flow into Poland, its distribution patterns and its influence on existing demographic structures (both captured at a local LAU 1 scale). By studying refugee flows at three time‐points, the study, on the one hand, offers a dynamic analysis and, on the other, identifies the spatial patterns behind the movement…

  • Regional dispersion of potential accessibility quotient at the intra-European and intranational level. Core-periphery pattern, discontinuity belts and distance decay tornado effect

Open Access•Piotr Rosik, Wojciech Pomianowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Transport Geography•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 12

The regional differences in the level of accessibility and GDP per capita in Europe are the subject of many scientific analyses and much applied research. Using the road network for the whole continent and the division of Europe into transport areas on the basis of NUTS 3, we have concentrated on the potential quotient as a research method. The quotient is a ratio of economic and population potential, and its level and spatial distribution differ…
