Identifying potential vertical spaces for nature-based solutions in dense urban context: GeoAI approach
Cities worldwide face numerous challenges, including the urban heat island effect, urban stormwater management, and climate change. Nature-based solutions (NBS) can mitigate these impacts, while providing ecosystem services and health co-benefits, yet retrofitting NBS within dense urban fabric is difficult because suitable land is scarce. Underused or unused vertical spaces on building facades and roofs could provide opportunities to increase gre…
Future-making beyond (im)mobility through tethered resilience
A citizen science toolkit to collect human perceptions of urban environments using open street view images
Street View Imagery (SVI) is a valuable data source for studies (e.g., environmental assessments, green space identification or land cover classification). While commercial SVI is available, such providers commonly restrict copying or reuse in ways necessary for research. Open SVI datasets are readily available from less restrictive sources, such as Mapillary, but due to the heterogeneity of the images, these require substantial preprocessing, fi…
Modelling active travel accessibility at the micro-scale using multi-source built environment data
Accessibility models explore how land use and transport systems interact to facilitate access to activities and daily needs. Existing applications generally model accessibility based on distance or travel time. For pedestrians and cyclists, the street-level environment (e.g., green visibility, streetside amenities, dedicated infrastructure) significantly influences people's willingness and ability to travel. Incorporating these features into acce…
Accessing eye-level greenness visibility from open-source street view images: A methodological development and implementation in multi-city and multi-country contexts
The urban natural environment provides numerous benefits, including augmenting the aesthetic appeal of urban landscapes and improving mental well-being. While diverse methods have been used to evaluate urban greenery, the assessment of eye-level greenness visibility using street-view level images is emerging due to its greater compatibility with human perception. Many existing studies predominantly rely on proprietary street view images provider …
To use or not to use proprietary street view images in (health and place) research? That is the question
Computer vision-based analysis of street view imagery has transformative impacts on environmental assessments. Interactive web services, particularly Google Street View, play an ever-important role in making imagery data ubiquitous. Despite the technical ease of harnessing millions of Google Street View images, this article questions the current practices in using this proprietary data source from a European viewpoint. Our concern lies with Googl…
Built environment influences commute mode choice in a global south megacity context: Insights from explainable machine learning approach
In this study, we aimed to investigate the influence of the built environment (BE) on commuter mode choice using machine learning models in a dense megacity context. We collected 10,150 home-based commuting trips data from Dhaka, Bangladesh. We then utilized three machine learning classifiers to determine the most accurate prediction model for predicting the mode of transportation chosen for commuting in Dhaka. Based on the predictive performance…
Environmental correlates of adolescent active travel to school in Asia: An ecological study
This study shows that Asian countries with a greater number of people living in urban areas, lower levels of overall adult physical activity and higher levels of night-time light have a lower prevalence of adolescent AST. Country-level physical and social environmental correlates explained some of the regional variance in AST. Future policy actions and interventions for the region need to be contextually sensitive to the environmental correlates …
Nature's contributions in coping with a pandemic in the 21st century: A narrative review of evidence during Covid-19
Walkability and Greenness Do Not Walk Together: Investigating Associations between Greenness and Walkability in a Large Metropolitan City Context
Our analysis indicates an overall negative relationship between greenness and walkability, with significant local variability. With ongoing efforts towards greening Sydney and improving walkability, more neighborhoods may eventually be transformed into becoming greener and more walkable
Spatial dimensions of the influence of urban green-blue spaces on human health: A systematic review
Scale effects in remotely sensed greenspace metrics and how to mitigate them for environmental health exposure assessment
Metrics representing exposure to the natural environment are widely used in environmental health-related studies. They are calculated using a variety of different data sources representing greenspace and a range of buffer sizes representing human interaction with the environment. Previous studies have identified issues relating to buffer distance and scaling effects on greenspace exposure assessments when using satellite image-derived metrics. We…
Noncommunicable Diseases, Park Prescriptions, and Urban Green Space Use Patterns in a Global South Context: The Case of Dhaka, Bangladesh
Urban green space use is often associated with improved physical and mental health and lower noncommunicable disease (NCDs) burdens. Factors that influence green space visits have been documented in cities of the Global North, but evidence of urban green space use patterns for cities in the Global South is scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate factors influencing urban green space use patterns in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a megacity of the Glo…
Integrating Data Mining and Microsimulation Modelling to Reduce Traffic Congestion: A Case Study of Signalized Intersections in Dhaka, Bangladesh
A growing body of research has applied intelligent transportation technologies to reduce traffic congestion at signalized intersections. However, most of these studies have not considered the systematic integration of traffic data collection methods when simulating optimum signal timing. The present study developed a three-part system to create optimized variable signal timing profiles for a congested intersection in Dhaka, regulated by fixed-tim…
