A Tale of Two Worlds
Studies on NGO–academic collaboration in international development focus on the joint conduct of research, often neglecting other cooperation activities. Here, we inductively explore and catalogue a fuller picture of NGO–academic relations, including practitioner perspectives towards academia. Based on 20 interviews with European development NGO staff and 51 survey responses, we devise a typology to capture the types and purposes of, as well as b…
Round‐Tripping Foreign Direct Investments
FDI round‐tripping has become an increasingly important issue in the world economy, with significant implications for tax revenues, regulatory frameworks, and economic policy. Little is known about its importance and characteristics from a country of origin perspective, and thus economic policies are ill‐prepared to address it. This study analyzes the determinants of round‐tripping in OECD countries and highlights the urgency of addressing it. Ke…
Changes in automotive value chain participation on the integrated periphery – The case of Czechia and Hungary
Central and Eastern European countries, including Czechia and Hungary, have become parts of the integrated periphery in the automotive industry. Through input-output analysis, company data and interviews, the article reveals the determining role of the industry in both economies and their deep integration in global value chains (GVCs). In addition to these similarities, the analysis reveals that domestic, simple and complex global value chain per…
Foreign trade relations of Hungary with China
Trade analysis for open economies is strategically important. Even though Hungarian trade relations are oriented towards the EU, the direct and indirect influence of Asia, mainly China, needs special attention. The paper focuses on direct bilateral relations between Hungary and China. The global value chain perspective enables the research to detect inter- and intra-industry dependencies and unfold and compare the industry focuses and dynamics of…
Foreign direct investment in the storm of the Covid-19 pandemic and the example of Visegrad countries
The immediate effects of COVID-19 on the global flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) were devastating, resulting in a large drop. Flows to the Visegrad countries were also affected but less than the world average. The fall in FDI was the result of underlying trends that started before the pandemic but accentuated by the latter, creating a “perfect storm”. These secular trends include the digitalisation of production and the birth of Industry …
Offshoring white collar jobs and structural change in host economies
The main objective of the paper is to investigate the extent to which inward foreign direct investment (FDI) in advanced business services (ABS) – a result of so-called offshoring of white collar jobs – contributes to the structural change of employment in regions of host economies. We use a fixed-effect regression model based on cross-regional panel data for Hungary and Poland for the period between 2005 and 2014. Our findings show that ABS FDI …
Introduction to the special section
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have always played an important role in European economies. The experience of certain countries and regions shows that the activities of dynamically growing, competitive SMEs can be a basis for rapid economic growth. This is even truer for internationalised SMEs, which are usually more competitive, innovative and successful, than their counterparts which concentrate their activities fully in the domestic …

In this article we rely on the concept of “international new ventures” (INV), and concentrate on the analysis of two research propositions in the case of selected Hungarian INVs, based on company interviews in two selected industries, biotechnology and information technology. First, we analyse the criteria of the selection of foreign markets in the internationalisation of these firms and second, the role of networks in the internationalisation pr…

Crisis and Upgrading
By triggering a wave of organisational restructuring, reconfiguration of supply chains and consolidation of business processes at multinational companies, the crisis offered significant upgrading opportunities for peripheral actors in globalised production networks (the so-called global value chains). Drawing on Hungarian case studies of local subsidiaries in the automotive and electronics industries, this essay investigates the crisis-induced pr…
Impacts of horizontal and vertical foreign investment in business services
This article examines the impact of foreign direct investment in business services on the economies of the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia and their place in the European division of labour. A distinction is drawn between horizontal market-seeking foreign investment in business services and efficiency-seeking vertical investments, which have increased since 2000. We posit a conceptual framework that differentiates between the static, dynamic…
