Religious Voting in Western Democracies
This volume provides the most systematic study on the role of religion and religiosity in electoral politics in Catholic, Protestant, and religiously mixed countries across Western Europe and in the United States, from the Second World War until the second decade of the new century. The volume’s main argument is that, despite the expectations of secularization theory, religiosity remains relevant when casting votes. The book pleads the case for t…
Attitudes of Spanish LGBTI+ Adolescents and Emerging Adults: Cultural and Political Practices Among 16 to 29-year-old Non-cis-hetero People
Never in Spain’s history have sexual minorities enjoyed the current rights. However, LGBTIphobic rhetoric displayed by extreme-right activism threats the gains made. An online survey among LGBTI+ people between 16 and 29 years was conducted. 152 people answered. Results show that Spanish LGBTI+ youth is mostly prone to activism, they were quite informed about legal initiatives and they mostly think that LGBTI+ people continue to suffer discrimina…
M Mobilizations and the penalization of counter-hegemonic protest in contemporary Spain
This article discusses 15-M and anti-austerity mobilizations in Spain from the perspective of repression and penalization. The literature has paid a great deal of attention to the consequences of this cycle of protest in relation to the quality of democratic participation and governance; it could be argued that the 15-M movement has raised the standards for key aspects of Spanish democracy. In articulating new counter-hegemonic claims, however, 1…
Governing Youth Politics in the Age of Surveillance
Conservative forces in Spain are depicting mobilised young people as an unruly youth; a threat to the security of the Spanish state. In this way, narratives based on stimulating panic in a society known to be fearful of juvenile crime are contributing to new forms of repression and surveillance, intended to impose limits on the right to protest. This chapter presents the so-called Ley Mordaza (‘Gag Law’) as the centrepiece of a new regime of gove…
This paper examines gender mainstreaming in Spain. Two dimensions of the gender mainstreaming approach are considered. First, the evolution of gender equality policies and, second, the interplay between the implementation of gender mainstreaming and the dominant working practices inside Spanish public administrations. In relation to the former, we studied a wealth of equality plans at different administrative levels. To study the latter, we condu…

The political associations and groups that advocate lesbian, gay and transsexual rights are presented as the voice of sexual communities and peoples.
