An Empirical Analysis of Institutional Coevolution in the European Union
Institutional effectiveness is widely considered an important factor for the success of the European integration process. The article investigates how the coevolution of formal and informal institutions influenced economic performance within the European Union from 1980 to 2019. Results indicate that all countries have achieved strong formal institutional frameworks but still diverge mostly in terms of informal institutional development. Cluster …
The return of comparative economic systems
Kornai profoundly contributed to place the system to the centre of economic analysis. His multidisciplinary system paradigm is fundamental for understanding and analysing the variety of economic solutions and its consequences. The strong scientific foundation of Kornai's approach provides a fruitful opportunity to further develop and apply it to the most fundamental economic issues, such as explaining the different performance and strength of dif…
The Routledge Handbook of Comparative Economic Systems
Institutions are tightly intertwined with other institutional, cultural and economic factors. The patterns of interconnections and interdependencies that such factors form resemble systems, much as different living organisms and the symbiotic relationships they engage in form ecosystems. This chapter traces analogies between symbiosis and the interdependencies that tie different social structures together. By presenting a methodological approach …

A flexible and concerned European Union – A new proposal
The paper proposes the construction of a multi-speed, multi-track and multi-level European Union framework as a way to increase the flexibility of the integration process and facilitate inter-country conflict resolution. The paper shows that this malleable framework is superior, even for sensitive macroeconomic spillover issues like monetary union and immigration
Comparative economics and European integration
Transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe and deep economic reforms in China and other emerging countries did not end the variety of economic systems. Various brands of comparative economics have shown this variety in both theory and different countries. An increasingly important form of this variety concerns the process of European integration. Systemic differences within the European Union are the source of difficulties and tension…
Regional Diversity and Local Development in the New Member States
This book analyzes regional and local models of development, in the context of existing socio-economic disparities and the impact of EU enlargement and European policy, offering a comparative and in-d
The Organisational and Productive Impact of the Economic System. The Case of SMEs
The distributive consequences of nationalism
IN RECENT YEARS the wheel of history apparently turned back in some parts of Europe, as several previously unified multinational countries broke up, following peaceful or bloody disintegration processes. If one is convinced that-in economic terms-integration is better than disintegration, because the latter reduces the market and increases transaction costs, and therefore diminishes the scope for the division of labour and economies of scale, one…
