‘Collected photographs of naked women; left the RAI in mysterious circumstances, disowned by RAI’
This article reconstructs the history of E.N. Fallaize, a member of the Royal Anthropological Society and the British Association for the Advancement of Science, during the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s, in order to assess his collection of mostly nude images. The collection exemplifies an uncomfortable ambiguity between ethnographic and pornographic images in the documentary record, the consideration of which makes visible an aspect of collecting and …
Preserving ‘the intellectual garbage of the past’
This article considers the persistent impulse to deaccession, destroy, or remove historical collections of pornography, erotica, and obscenity. In the USA and Europe, calls to clean out collections come from all sides. Some call for purging collections because of their origins. Others call for purging because of the immorality of the materials. To help provide background for institutions facing these calls, the article will consider the historica…
Aural Sex
Podcasts have become one of the media students use on a regular basis. Some people read the newspaper in the morning; others listen to podcasts when they take a walk. Frankly, I have only recently noticed that it’s become the twenty-first century, so I am unsurprised that I might well be catching up to a trend started twenty-five years ago with This American Life. For historians, something that began in 1995 is cutting edge. Agreeing to review …
‘Best love’
For decades, scholarship on the Great War (World War I) noted moments of cross-dressing as mere entertainment, one of the strange absurdities that the war produced without any consideration of the gendered and sexual components of such displays. More recently, scholars have focused on the homoerotics of men performing for other men. In contrast, this article suggests that female impersonation during the Great War allowed for the existence of plea…

Naked
Naked provides a well-organized overview of nudism in twentieth-century America, documenting the contributions of nudist leaders, intellectuals, court battles, and milestones for the nudist community. Though it bills itself as a cultural history, the volume connects the social history of nudists in America with the cultural history of how they portrayed themselves and were portrayed by the media. The ability to unite the two approaches is critica…
Claire Langhamer. The English in Love
In this important monograph, Claire Langhamer joins the coterie of historians who contribute to the history of emotions by providing a close study of a particular emotion: love. As Langhamer explains, she wants to show the ways that “[l]ove has a history” (p. 4). She makes use of a wide range of primary sources including newspapers and magazines, television programs and popular films, and scholarly and popular books, though the foundation of the …
