Environmental policy stringency and carbon leakages
This study examines the link between the strictness of environmental policies and carbon leakage in the European Union (EU). It utilizes an econometric model to analyse how carbon leakage is influenced by environmental policies and other factors. A comprehensive dataset spanning from 1995 to 2020 for 20 EU member nations is employed. This study is ground-breaking, as it is the first to comprehensively assess the effect of aggregated environmental…
Revisiting the Foreign Direct Investment-CO2 Emissions Nexus within the N-EKC Framework
This study explores the dynamic connection between foreign direct investment (FDI), economic growth and CO 2 emissions, a topic that has sparked considerable debate in extant literature. The study aims to shed light on these interactions within the context of South Asian countries. Uniquely, it expands the traditional Environmental Kuznet Curve (EKC) model to a cubic specification, enabling an examination of the N-shaped relationships between pol…
External Financing for Inclusive Growth in Lower - Middle Income West African Countries
Most developing countries are plagued with harsh economic realities, which motivate them to seek sustainable economic growth and development in line with goal eight of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To this end, this paper investigated the source of external financing that is most helpful for achieving inclusive growth in lower-middle-income West African countries. The study is a panel analysis of annual data extending from 200…
A Test of Hirschman’s Hiding Hand Principle in World Bank-Financed Hydropower Projects
This study is an attempt to determine whether the need to get hydropower project appraisals perfectly right during the pre-construction phase, so as to prevent significant overruns along with benefit shortfalls, should supersede the need to deliver projects at the earliest possible time so as to meet the needs of the people. To achieve the study objective, we test whether the Hiding Hand principle is predominantly benevolent or malevolent. We arg…
GDP volatility implication of tourism volatility in South Africa
The importance of tourism as one of the bedrocks of economic growth in South Africa suggests that volatility in the sector may have dire consequences. We therefore empirically analyse the impact of tourism volatility (TV) on the gross domestic product (GDP) volatility of the country, using time-varying approaches that treat the parameter estimations as functions of time, thereby overcoming the challenge posed by parameter instabilities, non-linea…
An asymmetric examination of the environmental effect of tourism in China
This article employs the non-linear autoregressive distributed lag model in analysing the environmental impact of tourism in China from 2002Q1 to 2018Q4, while controlling for non-renewable energy consumption, trade openness, urbanisation, per capita GDP and its quadratic form. The approach permits the simultaneous testing of non-linearities in the short and long run. This is achieved through negative and positive partial sum decompositions of th…
Private benefits, fiscal costs and economic resource costs of the private defined contribution pension systems in Turkey
This study addresses economic issues associated with the private defined benefit pension system in Turkey. Findings show that the new Turkish pension scheme has generated significant welfare improvements for individual investors, but at a loss in tax revenue and an economic resource cost to the country. If the bank-administered Tax-Free Contribution Accounts and/or Tax-Free Savings Accounts, similar to those operating in Canada, were adopted in T…
The synergistic effect of green trade and economic complexity on sustainable environment
It is commonly argued in what is termed the degrowth strategy that economic growth cannot occur side by side with environmental protection. In this study, it is instead argued that the spread of green products through economic complexity and international trade are possible means of solving this problem. To this end, the individual and interactive environmental impacts of economic complexity and international green trade are examined in a panel o…
Geopolitical risk and tourism
This paper provides an empirical insight into how geopolitical risks impact international tourism demand. An augmented tourism demand function was developed and empirically estimated in line with classical theory for a panel of 16 countries from 2005M1 to 2017M12 through the AMG and CCEMG estimation techniques that address underlying heterogeneity, non‐stationarity, and cross‐sectional dependence. The study further examines the potential moderati…
Unveiling the causal interactions among the US monetary policy uncertainty, exchange market pressure, and FDI‐flows in large emerging market economies
This study shows how exchange market pressure, FDI inflow, and FDI outflow in large emerging market economies interact with monetary policy uncertainty from the United States (US). A panel of 14 countries were examined using bootstrap Granger causality procedure that captures cross‐sectional dependence, reflecting the shared developmental features among emerging economies. In the panel of countries, two‐way relationships were unveiled between the…
Pathway to achieving sustainable food security in Sub‐Saharan Africa
According to the World Health Organization (2020), many parts of the world have demonstrated potentials for acute hunger and famine. Many countries in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) actively feature in this category due to geopolitical crises and other humanitarian challenges. Despite efforts by SSA governments, agricultural productivity continues to be inadequate in meeting nutritional needs across Africa. Thus, in the presence of economic expansion, …
Institutional transformation as an effective tool for reducing corruption and enhancing economic growth
Weak institutions and high levels of corruption are issues of great concern in West Africa because of their adverse effects on the economic growth of the region. While a significant portion of extant literature has focused on the determinants of corruption, empirical investigations of the effect of institutional quality on corruption are still limited, especially in Africa. This paper provides empirical evidence, which shows that improvement in t…
Economic and social determinants of carbon emissions
This research investigates the economic and social determinants of carbon emissions in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) over the period 1995–2016. The study particularly examines the link between CO 2 emissions and four socio‐economic variables (per‐capita GDP, urbanisation, fossil fuel energy consumption and international trade). A long‐run relationship amongst these variables is confirmed by Kao, Pedroni and Johansen pan…
The effect of geopolitical risks on insurance premiums
This article deals with the estimation of the risk‐insurance nexus. We specifically examined the effect of geopolitical risk on insurance premium in a panel of 18 countries, while controlling for the effect of real income. Second‐generation econometric methods were employed for this purpose, and the results provided strong evidence of a positive impact on insurance premiums by geopolitical risks. We specifically found that the impact of geopoliti…
Unveiling the causal impact of US economic policy uncertainty on exchange market pressure of African economies
One of the factors responsible for the growth of African economies is their interaction with advanced economies such as the United States. In this regard, this study investigated the causal linkages between the exchange market pressure (EMP) of African economies and the economic policy uncertainty (EPU) of the United States. A panel of nine African countries were studied from 1996 M01 to 2018 M12 using a bootstrap Granger causality test because o…
Unraveling the Causal Relationship Between Economic Policy Uncertainty and Exchange Market Pressure in BRIC Countries
This study examines the causal relationships between exchange market pressure and both global and domestic economic policy uncertainty among the Brazil, Russia, India, and China economies. We employed the bootstrap panel Granger causality approach, having found cross-sectional dependency among the countries as an indicator of their mutual developmental characteristics. The individual country analysis shows that, between exchange market pressure a…
Impact of Economic Policy Uncertainty on Exchange Market Pressure
Capturing changes in foreign reserves and exchange rates through the exchange market pressure, this article investigates whether economic policy uncertainty plays any role in exchange market pressure movements while controlling for the effects of domestic and external factors. A panel of 20 countries was examined from 2003Q1 to 2017Q4 using panel techniques that are consistent in the presence of heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence. The s…
