  • Post-work: What It Is, Why It Matters and How We Get There

    Helen Hester, Will Stronge•BOOK•Post-work•2025

What does the future hold for work in our new age of crisis? How do we make sure that the uncertain future into which we are heading is heavenly and not hellish? How can we take the pleasures of work with us and eliminate the pains? The answer: we need a post-work vision. Questioning the received wisdom that work is good for you, that you are what you do and that 'any job is a good job',Post-workoffers a new challenge to the work-centred society.…

  • Space Agency

    Open Access•Helen Hester•ARTICLE•Kulturwissenschaftliche Zeitschrift•2023

This essay looks at the figure of the cyborg via its origins in mid-twentieth century American astronautics. It begins by comparing different approaches to the ›space cyborg‹, helping to situate it within the distinctive cultural preoccupations of its times and places. The discussion then proceeds to consider the American cyborg’s roots in two discursive regimes: that surrounding military masculinities, and that surrounding the non-human or de-hu…

  • The Art of the Exploit: Gender Hacking and Political Agency

    Open Access•Helen Hester•ARTICLE•Paragraph•2023

This article considers the idea of gender hacking, particularly as it circulates in Paul B. Preciado's Testo Junkie, and places this in the context of wider discourses of both bio- and computer hacking. Of particular interest is how a hacking paradigm has come to inform twenty-first-century theories of activist intervention, and the implications of this for contemporary conceptions of political agency. Drawing out the parallels between conceptual…

  • Sapience + Care: Reason and Responsibility in Posthuman Politics

    Helen Hester•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Posthumanism can be understood as a position that de-prioritizes or rescinds the privilege of the human in some way – frequently by attempting to think humanity as one element of a wider ecology of interdependent forces. This paper argues that one can be on the side of the human without neglecting the assemblages of which we are all a part – by conceiving of humanity as a site of nascent potential for sapience + care – an alienated understanding …

  • Echoing flesh: The ‘voluminous body’ in heterosexual hard core

    Open Access•Helen Hester•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2016

This article examines the representation of fatness in heterosexual hard-core pornography whilst exploring both the usefulness and potential limitations of applying Jean François Lyotard’s ideas about the ‘voluminous body’ to this topic. The article reflects critically upon the supposedly transgressive potential of the fat cis female body in adult entertainment and, using examples from BBW (Big Beautiful Women) pornography, reflects upon the ways…

  • Introduction: Theorizing fat sex

    Open Access•Helen Hester, Caroline Walters•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2016

This special issue takes as its starting point an evident need to theorize fat sex – the need to think about how fat bodies are eroticized or excluded from eroticization, their investment with erotic and cultural capital in the 21st century, and their points of intersection with forms of embodied oppression such as race, class and gender

  • Giffing a fuck: Non-narrative pleasures in participatory porn cultures and female fandom

Helen Hester, Bethan Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Porn Studies•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 6

Pornography has long been associated with the development of leading-edge technologies and new media forms, so it should be of little surprise that adult entertainment now circulates online in the form of moving-image GIFs – the 256-colour compressed image files ubiquitous within digital culture. Several critics and cultural commentators have picked up on the rise of this so-called ‘microporn', linking sexually explicit GIFs with supposedly dimin…

  • Rethinking Transgression: Disgust, Affect, and Sexuality in Charlotte Roche's Wetlands

    Helen Hester•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This article explores the critical reaction to Charlotte Roche's novel Wetlands, and considers the ways in which this reaction reflects contemporary thinking on sex and transgression. While reviewers position the text as the site of a subversive politics and a specifically sexualized form of affect, much of the affective power of Wetlands lies less in its treatment of sex than in its largely ignored descriptions of the revolting body. Via an anal…
