Malnourished Child, Overweight Mother? Examining the Double Burden of Malnutrition in Sub‐Saharan Africa
The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) - the coexistence of child undernutrition and maternal overweight/obesity - within the same household is a growing public health challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study assessed the prevalence and determinants of DBM at the household level across 22 SSA countries using recent nationally representative Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from 103,497 mother-child under-five pairs. Outcomes inc…
The shadow of violence
Despite increasing efforts to improve reproductive health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), disparities persist in the use of modern contraceptives and maternal health services (MHS). Evidence suggests that exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) may influence women’s health-seeking behaviours, yet few studies have examined this relationship across multiple SSA countries. Using cross-sectional data from the most recent Demographic and Hea…

Burden of disease scenarios for 204 countries and territories, 2022–2050
BACKGROUND: Future trends in disease burden and drivers of health are of great interest to policy makers and the public at large. This information can be used for policy and long-term health investment, planning, and prioritisation. We have expanded and improved upon previous forecasts produced as part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) and provide a reference forecast (the most likely future), and alternativ…
Circumcising daughters in Nigeria
Education has been adjudged as an important behavioural change intervention and a key player in combating Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C). An assumed pathway is that it influences FGM/C attitudes. However, empirical evidence that explores this assumption is scarce. Hence, our study examines whether the associative effect of FGM/C continuation attitudes on circumcision of daughters is influenced by the level of a mother’s education in Ni…
Rural-urban variation in hypertension among women in Ghana
Women from urban and rural areas shed similar chance to be hypertensive in Ghana. Therefore, the health sector needs to target women from both areas of residence (rural/urban) when designing their programmes that are intended to modify women's lifestyle in order to reduce their risks of hypertension. Other categories of women that need to be prioritised to avert hypertension are those who are heading towards the end of their reproductive age, ric…
Effect of sexual violence on planned, mistimed and unwanted pregnancies among women of reproductive age in sub-Saharan Africa
Sexual violence plays a key role in mistimed and unwanted pregnancies. It is, therefore, prudent to develop various assessment techniques to detect sexual violence in unions and refer victims to appropriate services to diminish the risk of mistimed and unwanted pregnancies. Our findings provide a basis for developing and implementing policies and interventions aimed at reducing mistimed and unwanted pregnancies
Trends and determinants of contraceptive use among female adolescents in Ghana
These findings imply that intensifying educational messages on contraceptive use among adolescents using various newspapers and television stations to convey the messages and emphasizing the importance of using modern contraceptive is worthwhile
Women’s healthcare decision-making capacity and HIV testing in sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan African countries intending to improve HIV testing need to incorporate women's healthcare decision-making capacity strategies. These strategies can include education and counselling. This is essential because our study indicates that the capacity of women to make healthcare decisions has an association with decision to test for their HIV status
Ecological zone and symptoms of acute respiratory infection among children under five in Ghana
Since 1993, evidence suggest that a significant portion of Ghanaian under-five children have suffered from Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI). This study sought to examine the prevalence of ARI symptoms among under-fives across ecological zones as well as childhood and maternal factors associated with ARI between 1993 and 2014. We used data from Ghana Demographic and Health Surveys (1993-2014). The study sample included women of reproductive age w…
