First report of an acute case of Chagas disease in the municipality of Miraflores, Guaviare, Colombia
We present a case of acute phase Chagas disease in a 40-year-old male patient from Vereda Buenos Aires, Municipality of Miraflores, Department of Guaviare. The patient attended the emergency department with fever, headache, asthenia, adynamia and dysuria. The blood smear and urinalysis were positive for symptomatic urinary tract infection, but negative for malaria. Five days later the diagnosis of acute phase Chagas disease was confirmed after a …
Longitudinal associations between Mexican-origin youth's relationships with parents, siblings, and friends and individual adjustment
Across adolescence and into young adulthood, as youth experience both normative developmental and stressful life changes, close and supportive relationships are essential for healthy adjustment. Supportive relationships may be especially important for protecting Mexican-origin youth from developing depressive symptoms and engaging in risky behaviors given the emphasis within Mexican culture on close relationships, especially in families. With lon…
Mexican-origin siblings' unique and shared perspectives of sibling conflict: Links with adjustment
Siblings are ubiquitous in the lives of youth, but sibling conflict is linked to adjustment problems and risky behaviors. To advance understanding of older and younger siblings' unique and shared perspectives of conflict in Mexican-origin families, our study addressed two goals. First, using Multitrait-Multimethod Confirmatory Factor Analysis (MTMM-CFA; Kenny & Kashy, 1992), we estimated the variance accounted for by older and younger siblings' u…
Sibling and best friend conflict resolution strategies among Mexican-origin youth
Sibling relationships evolve into a more egalitarian relationship dynamic resembling friendships during adolescence, potentially facilitating the transfer of interpersonal skills across relationships. This study investigates cross-relationship associations in conflict resolution strategies with siblings and friends. Research on family-peer linkages, largely focused on White populations, often overlook the role of siblings in other ethnoracial con…
Longitudinal links between adolescent siblings’ gender-typed characteristics and sibling relationship quality: A dyadic approach
Sibling Relationships in Adolescence and Young Adulthood in Multiple Contexts: A Critical Review
In many contexts worldwide, most people grow up with one or more siblings. The current paper reviews research on sibling relationship quality (closeness, communication, and conflict) in adolescence and young adulthood in four different contexts: primarily White North American and European samples (132 articles reviewed); ethnic minority families (26 articles reviewed); China (6 articles reviewed); and when one sibling has a disability (21 article…
Malaria en la región eco-epidemiológica del Caribe Colombiano, 1960-2019
Motivation for the study: the information available on the epidemiology of malaria in the Colombian Caribbean region is incomplete, poorly systematized and its dissemination is limited. This has led to a lack of knowledge of its magnitude and a low perception of its importance as a public health problem. Main findings: the behavior of malaria is endemic-epidemic, with low to very low transmission, focused and with irregular outbreaks. Plasmodium …
Urban American Indians: A Comparison of Father Involvement Predictors across Race
Father involvement in families of urban American Indians has been a neglected area of research. In this study, the authors examined the associations among parental relationship quality, father involvement, and coresidence. The authors conducted a multiple group analysis through structural equation modeling comparing 107 American Indian fathers with fathers of the general population in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Although the r…
