  • Emotional positioning as a cognitive resource for arguing: Lessons from the study of Mexican students debating about drinking water management

Claire Polo, Christian Plantin et al.•ARTICLE•Pragmatics and Society•2017

This paper consists of a detailed analysis of how the participants in a debate build their emotional position during the interaction and how such a position is strongly related to the conclusion they defend. In this case study, teenage Mexican, students, arguing about access to drinking water, display extensive discursive work on the emotional tonality given to the issue. Plantin’s (2011) methodological tools are adopted to follow two alternative…

    Open Access•Christian Plantin•ARTICLE•Comunicação e Sociedade•2009•Cited by: 1

  • Argumentation studies and discourse analysis: The French situation and global perspectives

    Open Access•Christian Plantin, M Plantin•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This article focuses on the development of argumentation studies in France and their complex relations with discourse analysis. First, the meanings of the basic word `argument' in French and in American English are discussed and contrasted. Second, a brief historical section summarizes the complex history of rhetorical argumentation in France up until the late 1980s and the Perelmanian revival. Third, Grize `natural logic' and Anscombre and Ducro…

  • L'argument du paralogisme

    Christian Plantin•ARTICLE•Hermès•1995•Cited by: 1
