  • Simon Keith, Surveying the Domesday Book. Oxford

    Andreas Lehnertz•ARTICLE•Mediaevistik•2025

The Domesday Book is a famous source dating from 1086. It is a two-volume list of estates ( hides and carucatae ) and the resulting taxes due to the king of England. It also mentions the king’s vassals in the various counties and their boroughs, including the king’s lands ( terrae regis ), but also often how or with what it was equipped. The descriptions are at times very detailed. The German Lexikon des Mittelalters notes that the methods used t…

  • Jewish Archives, Archival Practices, and Jewish-Christian Business Records in the Medieval Holy Roman Empire

    Open Access•Andreas Lehnertz•ARTICLE•Aschkenas•2025

This paper traces the scattered proof for Jewish archival practices, both private and communal, in the medieval Holy Roman Empire. It outlines how these archival practices aimed to organize and conserve written records. I first explain why the production of records led to the need for archival practices and their organization. I then review the available sources for Jewish private and communal archives, while bringing comparative evidence from Ch…

  • Swearing Oaths and Affixing Seals

    Open Access•Andreas Lehnertz•ARTICLE•The Medieval History Journal•2024•References: 1

This study investigates ‘acts of citizenship’ and forms of belonging among Jews within the medieval Holy Roman Empire. Positing that citizenship was not just a matter of official status, it looks at ‘acts of citizenship’, such as oath-taking and sealing practices, showing how these were integral elements in the relationship between an individual and the town in which they lived. I argue that both oath-taking and sealing practices, with their perf…

  • Nadine Hofmann, Herrschaftspraxis und Lehnsbeziehungen der Landgrafen von Thüringen (1382–1440) . Veröffentlichungen der Historischen Kommission für Thüringen, Kleine Reihe, 59. Wien und Köln

    Open Access•Andreas Lehnertz•ARTICLE•Mediaevistik•2022

  • Dismantling a Monopoly

    Andreas Lehnertz•ARTICLE•Medieval Encounters•2021

This essay presents a case study from Erfurt (Germany) concerning the production of shofarot (i.e., animal horns blown for ritual purposes, primarily on the Jewish New Year). By the early 1420s, Jews from all over the Holy Roman Empire had been purchasing shofarot from one Christian workshop in Erfurt that produced these ritual Jewish objects in cooperation with an unnamed Jewish craftsman. At the same time, two Jews from Erfurt were training in …

  • Margarete, Reynette and Meide

    Andreas Lehnertz•ARTICLE•Jewish Studies Quarterly•2021

This paper explores the lives of three Jewish women in the Late Middle Ages – Margarete, Reynette and Meide of the Bonenfant family – who lived in Koblenz, which was part of the archdiocese of Trier. It aims to shed light on how the roles and relationships with each other and to the city changed in light of economic, political and legal settings that impacted Jewish life. I argue, that these three womens lives were centered around their hometown …
