The Challenges and Obstacles in Development Studies
The interest of the sociologist is primarily theoretical. That is he is interested in understanding for its own sake. He may be aware of or even concerned with the practical applicability and consequences of his findings, but at that point, he leaves the sociological frames of reference as such and moves into realms of values, beliefs and ideas that he shares with other men who are not sociologists. Research related to development work in sociolo…
The Economic Implications of Rapid Urban Growth in the Third World Countries
Apart from the natural population growth which accounts for urban population in the third world countries, rural-urban migration has accounted for the major growth and the resulting resource cost of providing for rapidly expanding urban population. The great majority move for economic reasons. Studies throughout the third world report time and again that the great majority of migrants consider that they have improved their condition, and that the…
Recent Trends in the Philosophy of Science
Auguste Comte’s positivist claim of sociology was readily accepted by the succeeding generations of sociologists. Their efforts to vindicate this claim served to establish sociology on firm empirical foundations. Within a relatively short period, sociology succeeded in amassing a vast body of empirical data. Although meticulous attention was paid to methodology, most of it seemed to be misplaced, as it was mainly concerned with the tools and tech…

Globalization and Cultural Conflict in Developing Countries
Globalization requires more than physically linking the world. For it to continue apace, there must alsobe a set of shared cultural understanding. Part of the process of globalization is the need to develop a culture that, insome broad way, can transcend diverse economic, ethnic, political, racial, and religious background. Such a globalculture will have to be one that either seeks to transcend normal affinities for one’s own cultural group or un…

Self actualization and locus of control as a function of institutionalization and non-institutionalization in the elderly
Adaptation to the aging process in the American Society would appear to represent a problem for at least a portion of the elderly population. This research represents a limited attempt to bring additional insights to bear on the adaptive portion of the aging process. Both groups of the elderly (institutionalized and non-institutionalized) indicate an externally oriented view of the social environment in which they exist. These results also provid…
U.S. older workers
Problems in the work place tend to increase with advancing age. The passage of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967 was an important response to growing concern with the biases against some older workers in employment practices. Wider use of a variety of techniques and practices such as the introduction of flexible work arrangements, special job counselling and selective placement, retraining and re-educating the general public…
Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Elder Abuse as a Family Dilemma
Comparative studies of cases by type of elder abuse disclosed distinct profiles of abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. Physical and psychological abuse were more closely associated with the problems of perpetrators than the victim. Victim-perpetrator dependency, perpetration psychopathology, and care giver stress, emerge from the comparative studies as major risk factors for elder mistreatment with substance abuse and social isolation as …
