  • Language Identity and the Development of Multilingualism in South Africa

Open Access•Lekau Eleazar Mphasha•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology and Social…•2016

Eleven languages have been declared official in the South African Constitution, which was adopted in 1996. Some citizens, especially Blacks, fail to acknowledge that the African languages are just as good and official as English. Black South Africans were to a greater extent made to believe that it is civilized to speak a “prestigious” European language. It is very important to develop all official languages into functional languages in all spher…

  • Taboos as Supernatural Interdictions in Folklore

Open Access•Lekau Eleazar Mphasha•ARTICLE•Studies of Tribes and Tribals•2016

This paper serves as a fundamental study of taboos as a form of interdictions among the African people. Taboos form part of social control structures by which internal order is maintained in agreement with the principles of traditional competence and individual societal rights and limitations. It has been observed that, in the approach to these prohibitions, the principle of constancy and personality can be welded together to enable people to des…

  • Revitalization of Imagery through Proverbs

Open Access•Lekau Eleazar Mphasha•ARTICLE•Studies of Tribes and Tribals•2015

Proverbs, as part of folklore, include traditions, customs, beliefs, superstitions and legends of ancient people living today. They form a source in which the African people in general, including the Northern Sotho people in particular, can find the general rules which have full authority over human culture. This implies that they form part of human behaviour. Since they are used in different situations to match the particular needs, they must be…

Tackling health issues with the languages which people understand is essential in improving the lives and prospects of millions of people. People in South Africa are vulnerable to Human Immune Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Disease Syndrome (AIDS), malnutrition, measles, diarrhea and other health challenges due in part to the lack of important information provided in their own languages and, in a culturally sensitive way. To link language and de…

  • Folktales Reveal the Cultural Values of the Community

    Open Access•Lekau Eleazar Mphasha•ARTICLE•The Anthropologist•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Folktales help the community to maximize their strengths. They develop their weaknesses into strengths and threats into opportunities. As folktales are figurative in nature, their comparison with various facets of life is expressed metaphorically. They identify culture which is learned and shared by all members of the community. They conceal the deeper meaning which is unambiguous in speech or writing and are truthful. They may be as old as the h…

  • The Inclusion of Cultural Meanings in Northern Sotho Dictionaries

Open Access•Lekau Eleazar Mphasha•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology and Social…•2013

Many Northern Sotho words in various dictionaries are treated not taking into account the cultural attributes with which they are associated. These dictionaries are often bilingual and were mostly compiled by non-native speakers of the language. Ziervogel and Mokgokong‘s Comprehensive Northern Sotho Dictionary(1975) seems to be the only dictionary that contains description of words in various denotations, including their cultural context. It expl…
