  • Geophagic Clays from Cameroon

Open Access•Georges-Ivo Ekosse, George Elambo Nkeng et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This study assessed the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of geophagic clays sold in some markets in Cameroon to ascertain their provenance, contamination status and human health risk. To achieve this, 40 samples from 13 markets in Cameroon were purchased and analysed using X-ray diffractometry, X-ray fluorescence and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for their mineralogy and geochemistry, respectively. The g…

  • Health Risk Evaluation of Trace Elements in Geophagic Kaolinitic Clays within Eastern Dahomey and Niger Delta Basins, Nigeria

    Open Access•Olaonipekun Oyebanjo, Georges-Ivo Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The deliberate consumption of earthly materials is a universally recognised habit with health benefits and risks to those that practice it. Thirteen (13) samples comprising of six (6) Cretaceous and seven (7) Paleogene/Neogene geophagic kaolinitic materials, respectively, were collected and analysed for trace element concentrations (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Zn, Pb, and Fe), and possible risk on consumers' health. The trace element compositions were obtaine…

  • Occurrence and Health-Risk Assessment of Trace Metals in Geothermal Springs within Soutpansberg, Limpopo Province, South Africa

    Open Access•Olatunde S Durowoju, Georges-Ivo Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Geothermal springs are natural geological phenomena that occur throughout the world. South Africa is blessed with several springs of this nature. Limpopo province contains 31% of all geothermal springs in the country. The springs are classified according to the residing mountain: Soutpansberg, Waterberg and Drakensberg. This study focused on the geothermal springs within the Soutpansberg region; that is, Mphephu, Siloam, Sagole and Tshipise. The …

  • Physicochemical, Geochemical and Mineralogical Aspects of Agricultural Soils in Limpopo Province, South Africa

    Open Access•K J Molepo, G I E Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2017•References: 19

Soil samples were collected from three selected sites (uncultivated, cultivated and grazing land) at University of Limpopo Experimental Farm (Syferkuil) in Mankweng area to characterise their physicochemical, geochemical and mineralogical properties and their influence on soil fertility for agriculture. Soil textural triangle using Texture Auto Lookup Software (TAL 4.2) Package was used to determine particle sizes of samples which were all domina…

  • Minerals in Human Geophagic Soils from Selected Rural Communities in Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces in South Africa

    Open Access•Georges-Ivo E Ekosse, Georges-Ivo Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Ecology•2015

Twelve representative human geophagic soil samples collected from selected rural communities in Gauteng and Limpopo Provinces, South Africa, were analyzed using X-ray diffractometry to identify, quantify and characterize their minerals constituents. Kaolinite, smectite, talc, muscovite, quartz, calcite, dolomite, microcline, goethite and hematite were the clay and non-clay minerals identified. Two most dominant minerals in the geophagic soil samp…

  • Soil Ingestion and Associated Health Implications

    Open Access•Makia L Diko, Georges-Ivo Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•Studies on Ethno-Medicine•2014

Geophagia, the deliberate ingestion of soil has both beneficial and detrimental health effects. The positive and negative effects of geophagia may vary depending on the physico-chemistry, mineralogy and geochemistry of the soil. In this study, geophagic soils from Moko, Cameroon were physico-chemically and mineralogically characterised in order to ascertain their health implications. Colour, particle size distribution (PSD), consistency limits, p…

  • Environmental association of clay minerals with potassium concentrations in soils close to an abandoned manganese mine – a multivariate and GIS analytical approach

    Open Access•Georges-Ivo Ekosse, Georges‐Ivo E Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006

Environmental implications resulting from association of clay minerals with K concentrations in soils close to an abandoned Mn oxide mine were investigated. Clay minerals in the < 4 μm fraction of soil samples were determined by X‐ray powder diffractometry, and K concentrations in the bulk samples by flame photometry. Identified kaolinite, illite and muscovite were semi‐quantified. Potassium concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 2.9 cmolckg−1. Correl…

  • Granulometry, cluster analysis and spatial distribution of manganese contaminated soils, Kgwakgwe, southeastern Botswana

    Georges-Ivo Ekosse, Georges‐Ivo E Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006

The particle size distribution (PSD) of 400 Mn contaminated soil samples was established, and generated data were statistically analysed and spatially presented. The PSD for the 53 μm – 4 μm size fraction soil samples ranged from 11.05 to 100 wt %, whereas that for < 4 μm was from 0.3 to 30 wt %. Texturally, samples were dominantly silt loam, although silt and sandy loam were also present, as well as loam, loamy sand and clay classes. Six cluster…

  • Environmental Mineralogy Of Soils Around Selebi Phikwe Nickel-Copper Plant, BOTSWANA

Georges-Ivo Ekosse, Georges Ekosse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2003

This study determined mineralogical changes in soils as a result of mining and smelting of nickel-copper (Ni-Cu). Soil samples obtained around the Selebi Phikwe Ni-Cu plant, Botswana were studied using petrographic microscopy and X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) technique. Bulk soil samples contained actinolite, albite, quartz, microcline, pyrrhotite, silicon sulfide and cobalt oxide, whereas the <2 μm fraction was made of kaolinite, illite, smect…
